PGA Tour winner misses short putt to get knocked out of US Open qualifier, promptly snaps putter over his knee

Scott Piercy was hoping to gain entrance to the US Open. He wound up down a putter.

The four-time PGA Tour winner was not happy with the shortest club in his bag after a couple of short misses at a US Open final qualifier in Dallas. According to Firepit Collective’s Ryan French, a.k.a. “Monday Q Info” on Twitter, Piercy missed a great chance to claim the final spot available at Dallas Athletic Club – then he missed another for an alternate spot.

Then he snapped. Literally.

On one hand, we’d never condone this type of behavior, because, you know, “the kids” might be watching. On the other, you have to appreciate the fire shown by this 42-year-old with more than $US21 million in career earnings.Then again, you also have to factor in the frustration that has come from a tough past 14 months for Piercy. Last March he was dropped by several sponsors for a pair of offensive Instagram posts. Piercy, who tied for second behind Dustin Johnson at the 2016 US Open, hasn’t had a top 10 this season and ranks just 130th in the FedEx Cup standings.

And there was also some frustration from the qualifier itself. After weather delays forced the two-round event that began on Monday to finish late on Tuesday, nearly half of the field – including fellow PGA Tour pros like Graeme McDowell and Pat Perez – withdrew.

We’re guessing Piercy would have rather withdrawn then fail to claim one of 10 available spots (and alternate spots) for next month’s US Open at Torrey Pines in this fashion. That’s a lot of effort to come up empty-handed – and with your putter in pieces.

Piercy will play in this week’s Charles Schwab Challenge beginning tonight. He just might have to hit up the Colonial Country Club pro shop first.
