Powell Earns Top Spot as Petrels Open Season On High Note

MILLINGTON, Tenn. Elizabeth Powell earned a co-win with back-to-back 1 under par 71’s in leading the Oglethorpe women’s golf team to a top-five finish in the team’s fall opener Monday and Tuesday at the Joe and Lee Duncan Invitational.

The win marked the first of Powell’s career, and her 36-hole score of 142 was only three strokes off the Oglethorpe all-time record. She went into a three-way playoff for medalist distinction and narrowly missed the honor by way of missing an 18-foot birdie putt and instead settling for par.

Tina Honnef of Mississippi College, a Division II program, sank her eight-foot birdie putt to earn medalist.

Abrianna Carstens (72-78) followed closely behind Powell as the second finishing Petrel in 10th overall. This came after making her way into seventh overall after her even par opening round on Monday. Sophia Morettini (81-78) finished 29th individually matching Carstens with the second-lowest score over the course of day two.

As a team, Oglethorpe fired rounds of 305-316 to earn the fifth-place finish.

Morgan McKenzie (76-83) headlined the Oglethorpe B team with a 29th-place finish. She had earned a spot in the top 20 after a strong 76 to start the season in Monday’s opening round, her debut.

Grace Daech and Alexis Sinutko also landed in the top 50.

Up next, Oglethorpe heads to Montgomery, Alabama, for the MCC Intercollegiate hosted by Huntingdon. The 36-hole event is set for Sunday-Monday, Sept. 22-23.
