ATLANTA, Ga. – Oglethorpe junior Elizabeth Powell has been named the Southern Athletic Association athlete of the week after a record breaking third place finish at Camp Lejeune.
Powell showed improvement during each of last weekend’s Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate, scoring 75-72-71 (218). Powell’s third-place finish led the Stormy Petrels to a fourth place team finish, their highest of the season so far.
Powell’s day-two and day-three scores helped Oglethorpe break the 54- and 36-hole team scoring records, previously set in 2022, and the Petrels were one stroke off the 18-hole record with their 294 on Sunday.
Powell led the field with 39 pars, and she also ranked top 10 in par 3, par 4 and par 5 scoring. She was 1 under on the par 4’s.
This was Powell’s second athlete of the week nod this season, and of her career. Oglethorpe swept this week’s SAA honors, as Sam Karman earned the men’s distinction.
Up next, Powell and the rest of the women’s team are headed for the SAA Championships beginning Friday, April 25, in Dickson, Tennessee.
