Jon Rahm moved into pole position at LIV Golf Adelaide with a superb bogey-free nine-under 63 in Friday’s second round at The Grange Golf Club.
The Legion XIII captain heads into the weekend on 13 under, one shot clear after 36 holes, and within touching distance of his first individual LIV Golf victory in 16 months.
One added incentive? The winner in Adelaide traditionally celebrates on stage with Grammy Award-nominated Australian artist Fisher.
“Being able to share that stage with Fisher on Sunday as the champion is something I think all of us want to do,” Rahm said. “It’s just a unique experience.”
Rahm was outstanding on the greens, holing a 47-foot eagle putt at the par-five 7th and adding five more putts from between 10 and 25 feet. In total, he made approximately 151 feet of putts.
“It was a fantastic day on the greens,” he said. “I can’t remember the last time I made this many.”
RangeGoats GC’s Ben Campbell sits one stroke back after matching Rahm’s 63, sparked by five consecutive birdies. The New Zealander, who has extensive experience on Australia’s sandbelt layouts, is enjoying strong support from family and friends.
“It’s as close as I get to playing at home,” Campbell said.
Crushers GC captain Bryson DeChambeau is a further shot adrift after a five-under 67 that included an eagle at the par-five 7th. Despite wedge struggles and a plugged bunker lie that led to bogey at the par-three 14th, he remains firmly in contention.
“I was scrambling all day,” DeChambeau admitted.
Anthony Kim (4Aces GC) is solo fourth after a bogey-free 67, while Talor Gooch and Southern Guards GC’s Branden Grace share fifth. Grace’s bogey-free round of 64 included eight birdies.
Scoring was significantly lower than Thursday, with three rounds of 63 recorded and a field stroke average of 69.035 – more than two shots better than the opening round. Fireballs GC’s David Puig produced the league’s third-ever albatross.
In the team competition, RangeGoats GC and 4Aces GC are tied on 23 under after the second round, with three teams – including home favourites Ripper GC – one shot back. Lucas Herbert’s seven-under 65 was the Rippers’ best score of the day.
