THE cheers and laughter give it away.
And everyone connected with Crescent Head Country Club knows they have their club on the right path.
The addition of an 18-hole mini golf course alongside Australia’s only PGA-rated six-hole golf course has already been considered an unqualified success.
Sustainability, diversification and inclusiveness were the primary reasons for the changes to this new addition to the golfing landscape on the North Coast.
The whole mini course is accessible by wheelchair, which is already bringing new faces to the golf course as those curious to test out the new facility begin to make it a pilgrimage.
Groups of would-be golfers with disabilities are welcomed at Crescent Head and busloads of senior citizens have also been joining the throngs who are arriving for a few pleasurable hours playing the new layout.
The facilities are already being utilised by schools, for birthday parties, for corporate events and for all sorts of functions, with a gazebo built by the club a perfect spot to entertain before or after your game.
“The really attractive thing about this mini-golf course is that age is no barrier,” secretary-manager Colan Ryan told Inside Golf.
“From about the age of six with no maximum age and any ability or disability, you’re welcome to have a game here.
“You’d be hard-pressed to find a better way to entertain a group of people or children.”
And it seems the senior citizens are enjoying it as much as anyone.
“You do hear the occasional roar go up because someone has had a hole-in-one or done something special; it’s fantastic,” said Ryan.
“There are so many reasons you may wish to check out this new mini golf course.
“Not the least of those would be the 520,000 litres of water in three tanks that we now have stored underground to irrigate the six-hole golf course next door.
“Then there also the 930 different plants that are thriving in the mini golf arena.
“We’re fairly certain this is the best mini golf course in Australia and we urge anyone who doesn’t believe us to come along and find out for themselves.”
Certainly those lucky enough to visit for a game will also notice Crescent Head’s mini golf course is unlike any other with piped music, lights, water features, gazebos, disability access, plants and enough other attractions that any other mini golf course is going to look rather plain by comparison.
“We just want people to come and check it out for themselves . . . they won’t be sorry,” said Ryan.
The club is also keen to do special deals for birthday parties and social groups.”
Federal Member for Cowper Pat Conaghan and State Member for Oxley Michael Kemp recently joined the Crescent Head Country Club management and directors for the official opening of this long-awaited facility and water re-use system upgrade.
Funding for the $2 million project was originally secured in 2020, with just over $1.3 million successfully awarded to the initiative as part of the National Party’s Building Better Regions Fund.
An additional NSW Government grant of $100,000 was subsequently obtained with the remaining $600,000 provided by the club.
Ryan explained that the club wanted something “sustainable and inclusive” which would give the club additional income.
“The designers were told we wanted wheelchair access all the way around,” said Ryan.
“As far as we know it would be the best golf venue for accessibility anywhere.
“It has come up great – and it looks fantastic.
“The mini golf course was designed to look more like a golf course than you might expect from a mini-golf layout.”
Another great attraction at Crescent Head are the two restaurants, which is unusual for a club of that size.
Yet it means members and guests are spoilt for choice: Upstairs at Crescent Head CC is Barnesy’s Bistro which offers modern Australian cuisine.
Then downstairs there’s Mo’s Bamboo Chinese Restaurant, boasting authentic Chinese food.
And if you’re not into golf, well, there is also tennis, bowls and the mini golf . . . and the Country Club boasts their own fishing club as well.
