For any golfer, it’s vitally important to have equipment that suits and enhances their game.
And that applies to each end of the scale.
For a player at the very top of the game such as four-time Major winner, Rory McIlroy, it’s absolutely essential to get his clubs spot on.
In fact, McIlroy claims that when testing new equipment, a club will only have a spot in his bag if he feels an instant impact.
For high handicappers, having the wrong golf clubs can make it difficult to improve and, ultimately, that takes enjoyment out of the game.
Fitted clubs can enhance forgiveness by increasing the sweet spot and providing a higher moment of inertia (MOI), key for players that often miss the middle of the club face.
So McIlroy’s advice: go and get fitted!
McIlroy says: “For the regular player, golf is a pretty difficult game at times and if you can do anything possible to make the game a little bit easier, that’s what equipment is here for.
“Equipment is there to help you in some way, so if you can get the right shaft, length of club, loft or lie angle dialled in, you should be able to go out there and play better golf.
“I mean, there’s no way I could play with a set of irons half a degree too upright for me because everything would just start to go left and I’d understand that, I’d notice that and I’d need to go and get a change so I’m sure there’s so many people out there that are using golf equipment that isn’t quite right for them.
“It’s critically important to have a club in your hand that you completely trust.
“I can tell within the first five shots whether the club is going to go in my bag.”
Highlighting the fact, the addition of the 2025 TaylorMade Qi35 to his bag would have been a result of McIlroy feeling instant improvement in comparison to his previous TaylorMade Qi10.
Making sure your equipment is right for your game often has a misconception of being overly expensive and only for the best players.
However, the reality is that you don’t have to buy a whole new set of clubs!
Adjusting a current set of clubs for shaft length, lie angle and even grip size can be relatively inexpensive in relation to the amount spent on green fees and will pay dividends in your performance on the golf course.
Time to take Rory’s advice!
