Justin Rose produced a stunning late charge to claim the St. Jude Championship, birdieing the third playoff hole to edge JJ Spaun at TPC Southwind on Sunday.
The Englishman, a 12-time PGA Tour winner and 2013 US Open champion, reeled off four consecutive birdies on the back nine to force extra holes, then rolled in the decisive putt in sudden death for his first victory since Pebble Beach in 2023.
Rose closed with a three-under 67 to finish on 16-under-par 264, matching Spaun, who shot 65.
Overnight leader Tommy Fleetwood once again saw victory slip away, settling for a tie for third with world No 1 Scottie Scheffler at 15 under.
Fleetwood led by two with three to play but bogeyed 17 to extend his winless run on the PGA Tour to 162 starts.
Spaun looked poised to seal it after birdies at 16 and 17, including a 20-footer, but Rose’s birdie barrage from the 14th to the 17th saw him join the playoff.
After matching pars and birdies over the first two extra holes, Rose sank an 11-footer on the third as Spaun missed his reply.
Scheffler, chasing a fifth win of the season, closed with a 67 to retain his lead in the FedExCup Playoffs.
South Africa’s Aldrich Potgieter closed with a three-under 67 to finish in a tie for 59th.
Potgieter started the week comfortably inside the FedExCup Playoffs cut line, but three lacklustre rounds earlier in the tournament saw him slip to 52nd in the standings, missing out on next week’s BMW Championship by two spots.
