World No 1 Scottie Scheffler stormed to victory in the PGA Tour’s Procore Championship on Sunday, sealing his sixth title of the year and issuing a Ryder Cup warning to Europe.
The four-time Major champion carded a five-under 67 at Silverado Resort in Napa, California, to finish on 19-under 269 – one stroke clear of Ryder Cup teammate Ben Griffin.
Griffin, a captain’s pick for his first Ryder Cup appearance, began the final round with a one-shot lead and opened with three straight birdies, but his two-under 70 wasn’t enough to hold off Scheffler.
His 18-under 270 total was one ahead of veteran Lanto Griffin, who surged with a seven-under 65 to boost his fight for full playing rights next season as he continues his comeback from back surgery.
Ben Griffin still had a chance to force a playoff after reaching the par-five 18th in two. His 60-foot eagle putt stopped inside six feet, but he missed the birdie chance.
“I felt like I just wasn’t quite as sharp from short range as I needed to be, but I’ll get to work this week and hopefully make every single one of them at the Ryder Cup,” Griffin said.
Scheffler, who rolled in six birdies against a lone bogey, said he was pleased with his form heading into the biennial match play showdown.
“The thing I always focus on most going into tournaments is my preparation,” Scheffler said. “When I step up on the 1st tee, I can tell myself I did everything I could to play well. I definitely feel that way going into the Ryder Cup, and I’m excited to get it started.”
Scheffler’s birdie run included an 11-footer at the 3rd, a five-footer at the 5th and a 26-foot putt at the par-three 7th. He fired from the left rough to a foot at the 10th, then bounced back from a three-putt bogey at 11 with birdies at 12 and 15.
“I kind of did my best to just stay in my own world and try to keep making birdies,” Scheffler said. “The golf course just got really tough late this afternoon … I did a good job of staying patient and finishing off nicely.”
The American star will spearhead the US challenge when Keegan Bradley’s team face Europe at Bethpage Black starting 26 September. Ten of Bradley’s 12 players teed it up this week in Napa.
US Open champion JJ Spaun, another Ryder Cup rookie, closed with a six-under 66 for sixth on 15-under 273 – one shot behind Emiliano Grillo and world No 1 amateur Jackson Koivun.
South Africa’s Garrick Higgo shared seventh on 14-under 274 after a final-round 71.
Koivun, chasing a breakthrough win, faltered with back-to-back bogeys at 12 and 13 but rallied with birdies at 15 and 16 to secure his third top-10 finish on the PGA Tour.
Argentina’s Grillo, winner in Napa in 2015, birdied his last three holes for a six-under 66 to tie for fourth.
