Schwartzel reflects ahead of Masters bid

One of South Africa’s most celebrated golfers, Charl Schwartzel, returns to Augusta this week for his 17th Masters appearance, revisiting the scene of one of South African golf’s most iconic victories.

Schwartzel famously claimed the 2011 Masters title, winning the 75th edition of the tournament by two strokes over Jason Day and Adam Scott. His victory was sealed with a remarkable finish, becoming the first player in Masters history to birdie the final four holes on Sunday to secure the Green Jacket.

The triumph carried added significance for South African golf, coming 50 years after Gary Player’s historic win in 1961, when he became the first international champion at Augusta National.

Schwartzel has remained a consistent presence at Augusta, with his best result since victory coming in 2017, where he finished third, underlining his continued competitiveness at one of golf’s most demanding venues.

Reflecting on his return, Schwartzel said: “Every year you go back, you realise just how special Augusta is. When you’re younger, you’re focused on performing, but as you get older, you gain a real appreciation for what it means to be there. It’s a privilege to return every year.”

He added: “For me, it’s always that stretch around 15 and 16. Making that putt on 16 and hearing the crowd erupt, that moment has always stayed with me. It’s such a beautiful course, but there’s something about 16 that will always stand out.”
