World number one golfer Scottie Scheffler will have his regular caddie, Ted Scott, back on his bag for the finale of the FedEx Cup playoffs this weekend.
Scott, who has been at Scheffler’s side for 17 victories in the last four seasons, including four majors, took an unexpected leave of absence due to an emergency personal matter and missed the final round of the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
Scheffler continued his epic rise to golfing invincibility by winning the BMW Championship at Caves Valley Golf Club the following week, without the help of Scott.
He used fill-in caddie and good friend Brad Payne for the final round at the FedEx St. Jude Championship and chaplain Michael Cromie at the BMW Championship.
Scheffler was initially unsure about Scott’s availability for the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Course, which starts on Thursday.
“Ted’s where he needs to be right now,” Scheffler said. “I think caddying is probably the last thing on his mind, as it should be. I’ve been able to talk to him a few times. Family’s in good spirits. Everybody seems to be doing well.”
But Scott is now signed up on the PGA Tour caddie list for the Tour Championship and is expected to be back in action.
Scott discussed how he hooked up with Scheffler in episode four of Netflix’s Full Swing Season 3.
“Basically, a friend of mine approached me and said, ‘You’re about to receive a phone call from a really good player,’” said Scott.
“This guy is really good. Like really good.’ I had never really met Scottie other than that we played with him in the New Orleans tournament and I saw that he was kind of feisty, you know? That was one of the questions that I asked him when he called me.
“I said, ‘I don’t know if I want to work for you because of your attitude.’ When I posed that question to him, he said, ‘That’s a fair question and I’m willing to work on it.’ All I need is a little bit of hope and I’m willing to get behind anybody. So I decided to take the job and here we are.”
