Scottish Open prize money: How the massive $9milllion purse was shared

Previously journeyman Chris Gotterup’s biggest pay day was $720,000 for his victory in the first playing of the Myrtle Beach Classic in 2024.

At The Renaissance Club, the American held off playing partner Rory McIlroy to scoop over $1.5m and move up to 39th on the FedExCup standings.

As well as booking his place at Royal Portrush this week, Gotterup also rockets up to 49th on the world rankings after a week which included a second-round 61.

“They are both very special. The first is the first, and I feel like a lot of people say that the second one is harder just because you have expectations and whatnot. It’s definitely more validation this week,” explained the 25-year-old.

“Myrtle Beach was amazing, but this one, I feel like I’ve been talking to my team about I want to take the next step, and I feel like this is part of that.”

For McIlroy the runners-up pot extended his lead at the top of the Race To Dubai rankings, as well as closing the gap on Scottie Scheffler on the PGA Tour, while the big mover was the 27-year-old who was tied with the Masters champion.

Marco Penge moved up 10 spots to third on the Race To Dubai money list – he had already qualified for Royal Portrush – and he is now in a great position to lock up a place on the PGA Tour for next year.

The English youngster also gave his Ryder Cup chances a huge boost with this being a Rolex Series event.

He said: “I wasn’t in this event at the start of the year and I really wanted to be here.

“I looked at the leaderboard when I was on the course and the names in that top 10, and you see my name, it’s like a bit wild. I’m kind of up-and-down with looking at leaderboards but I felt comfortable to have a look now and then.

“Obviously I played really well at the PGA, and my stats after that week give me so much confidence being No. 1 tee-to-green, the way I’ve been playing, I know that I can compete with these guys. But you know, even today, kind of under that pressure, it still is a little bit of an unknown.”

For Matt Fitzpatrick it was his second highest return this season on the PGA Tour while for Nicola Hojgaard it was a welcome return to something like his best form.
