Dylan Shaw-Radford fought the elements as well as his rivals and came out on top to claim victory at the Scottish Boys’ Open Championship.
In a gruelling final day, the Huddersfield golfer carded scores of 69 and 77 to go with an opening round 71 and take the title by a shot from Wales’ Joe Jones and by two from another young Englishman, Thorndon Park’s Charlie Croker.
With Thursday’s play wiped entirely due to severe weather at Murcar Links just north of Aberdeen and the tournament reduced from 72 to 54 holes, the focus was on a 36-hole race to the finish on the final day.
Shaw-Radford’s middle round paved the way for victory with six birdies and just four dropped shots proving to be a Herculean effort in the windy and cold conditions.
The afternoon round featured just one birdie at the 16th hole – but the Yorkshire golfer’s ability to play the final seven holes in one under par got him over the line.
Shaw-Radford – winner of last year’s England Golf Boys’ Champion of Champions crown – made it a glorious finale to a day of success for young English talent on Scottish links.
Earlier in the day, and over on the west coast, Northumberland’s Rachel Gourley had scooped the Scottish Girls’ Open title by winning at Irvine Golf Club.
