In a year of certifiable Big Deals for Shot Scope, this one might be the certifiably biggest.
The Edinburgh, Scotland-based company is announcing today the launch of its newest product: a fully functional GPS and shot tracking app for your Apple Watch. This is significant for Shot Scope, as it continues to diversify its footprint by offering golfers yet another way to access its ever-expanding universe of products.
The new app provides Apple Watch users with a premium, hardware-free GPS, shot tracking and data-collection solution.
Shot Scope’s Apple Watch app: What’s the big deal?
Before we go too far down the road here, let’s get something on the table. What Shot Scope is launching today is neither ground-breaking nor revolutionary. It has the same functionality as its X5 and V5 shot tracking GPS watches. Heck, providers such as Golfshot provide Apple Watch connectivity with shot-tracking capabilities.
What makes this app appealing is the fact that, like all of Shot Scope’s products, it requires no annual fee, subscription or service charge. You buy the app once for $149.99 and it’s yours forever, updates and all. You own your data and it will be permanently available to you through the Shot Scope portal.
Yes, there are free GPS apps you can use with your Apple Watch, and some might even include a certain level of stat tracking. Shot Scope, however, offers you the most robust stat-tracking and game analysis package this side of Arccos. If you already have an Apple Watch, this might be the best value going.
What does it do and how does it do it?
As mentioned, creating a GPS app that connects to and works with your Apple Watch isn’t groundbreaking. And there’s enough existing technology in Apple Watches to detect shots based on movement and sound accurately. From there, Shot Scope can store the data and analyze your game, just as it does with its other shot-tracking devices.
While it doesn’t know exactly what club you hit, a combination of AI and your existing data will make its best guess. You can then confirm or adjust. The app will get smarter in its club recommendations and assumptions the more you use it.
“The more it’s used, the more accurate it becomes,” Shot Scope Chief Commercial Officer Gavin Dear tells MyGolfSpy. “It syncs automatically through the IOS app, so users have full use of the entire Shot Scope ecosystem.”
Specifically, the new Shot Scope Apple Watch app will perform all of the how-far functions you’d expect, including detailed hole maps with crisp, clear Apple-fueled overhead visuals of each hole. You’ll be able to easily access front and carry distances for hazards, or any point on the hole, simply by tapping the watch screen.
The app also features green contour maps along with standard front-middle-back distances.
Shot Scope vs Arccos stat tracking
You could say that Shot Scope and Arccos are the Alpha and the Omega of shot and stat tracking. They do it better than anyone else and both offer significant data packages that offer plenty of insight into your game.
Arccos, however, has upped its game this year with a significant upgrade to its app and its integration with Meta AI glasses. Those are things you get when you pay a $199 annual subscription fee on top of actually buying the product itself.
Shot Scope, however, has consistently taken the opposite approach: no subscription or user fees. You still get over 100 Tour-level stats as well as strokes-gained metrics, a data-driven course strategy builder called MyStrategy and the new Shot Scope 6 framework, an updated dashboard that breaks down all your game stats into six digestible performance analytics.
Deciding which one is better depends on what level of analytics you’re looking for. The new Arccos update leverages AI to analyze each round more deeply and give you very specific, actionable areas to focus on during practice. It recommends drills for all aspects of your game, provides instant on-course strategies for each hole, takes weather conditions into account and even provides AI-generated warm-up sessions.
Of course, you’re going to pay for all that.
Shot Scope, on the other hand, keeps things simple. It doesn’t overwhelm you with information, but you can dive in as deeply as you wish. It does not, however, close the loop by offering personalized drills or improvement plans. There’s still a ton of information that’s very well presented. However, you’ll have to put that data to use on your own.
On the plus side: Once you buy a Shot Scope product, you own your data.
Will the Shot Scope Apple Watch app be worth it?
If you already own an Apple Watch and want more shot tracking data, this gets a presumptive thumbs up. We say presumptive because there are bound to be a few bumps that show up at launch. As always, we’ll test it to find out.
Before we go much further, this app is for Apple Watch only. There is no Android version at this time. There’s no word from Shot Scope on whether one is in the works.
As many of you know, there are a ton of cheap/free smartwatch GPS apps out there. Your $149.99 gives you access to Shot Scope’s entire ecosystem, including its impressive shot tracking capabilities and game analytics package.
Perhaps the closest comp I can give you is the Golfshot app. It also integrates with your Apple Watch and uses similar technology to track shots. Our experience shows Golfshot works quite well. However, Golfshot carries an annual fee of $79.99 to $99.99, depending on what package you want.
For $149.99, the new Shot Scope app provides the same functionality as its V5 and X5 GPS/stat tracking watches for up to $150 less. And while the V5 and X5 are fine GPS/shot tracking watches, neither serves as a full-featured smart watch. At best, when not on the course, they qualify as a so-so wristwatch.
Adding full Shot Scope functionality to an Apple Watch, on the other hand, is enticing as hell.
