The European golf season has reached its crescendo as the DP World Tour Play-offs kick off this week in the United Arab Emirates. Rebranded under a new title partnership with local developer Aldar, the tournament formerly known as the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship has a fresh identity but the same astronomical stakes.
A premier 70-player field is descending upon the desert, where every swing carries massive financial and seasonal weight. With a staggering $9,000,000 purse on the line and the race for Europe’s Number One golfer hanging in the balance, the golfing world turns its eyes to the coastline of Yas Island.
Here is everything you need to know ahead of this week’s high-stakes preview.
1. The high-stakes global calendar context
As the opening leg of the DP World Tour Play-offs, this event is a genuine pressure cooker. There is no 36-hole cut, meaning all 70 players are guaranteed four rounds of action. However, the real battle is just to survive the week.
A massive 9,000 Race to Dubai points are up for grabs – 1,000 more than regular Rolex Series events. Only the top 50 players in the standings by Sunday evening will earn a ticket to next week’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai. For those hovering around the bubble, one poor round could abruptly end their 2026 season.
2. A star-studded, drama-filled field
The field is loaded with elite international talent, boasting six Major champions including Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Adam Scott, and Patrick Reed. Adding an intriguing narrative twist, European Ryder Cup stalwarts Rahm and Tyrrell Hatton are making their first competitive appearances since announcing they will not join LIV 2.0.
They are joined by defending champion Aaron Rai, who returns to the site of his dramatic 2025 playoff victory over Tommy Fleetwood.

3. The great Middle East omissions
While the field is top-heavy, it is impossible to ignore who is missing. Ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East have led to several high-profile withdrawals. Notable stars like Shane Lowry, Matt Fitzpatrick, Robert MacIntyre, Justin Rose, and Ludvig Aberg have chosen not to travel.
For Rose and MacIntyre, sitting outside the top 50 means their omission automatically eliminates them from making next week’s grand finale.
4. Yas Links: the coastal wind beast
The venue, Yas Links Abu Dhabi, is a masterpiece designed by Kyle Phillips. Measuring 7,425 yards, it is a traditional links layout uniquely transposed onto the shores of the Arabian Gulf.
The course features rolling fairways, massive bunkers, and a brutal 646-yard par-5 18th hole. The ultimate defence here is the coastal wind. If the breeze remains calm, players can attack the pins; if the desert winds howl, it becomes a grueling test of ball flight control and short-game precision.
5. The betting odds and angles
According to bookmakers Rory McIlroy opens as the favourite at 11/2. Tommy Fleetwood sits just behind at 7/1, while Jon Rahm offers tantalising value hovering around 9/1 to 10/1.
For a sharp betting angle, look at Spain’s Eugenio Chacarra. Chacarra enters the week as the number one player in the Race to Dubai standings after a phenomenal three-win season, proving he has the rare ability to close out tournaments even when he isn’t playing his absolute best golf.
6. The talk from the putting greens
The early-week chatter around the practice greens is centred squarely on the shifting sands of the Harry Vardon Trophy standings. McIlroy and Patrick Reed are openly playing catch-up to the red-hot Chacarra.
Meanwhile, defending champion Aaron Rai has spoken of his deep affection for the venue. Fresh off receiving the inaugural Rory McIlroy Award for his spectacular Major championship performances earlier in the year, Rai noted that returning to Yas Links feels incredibly special as he looks to close out a career-defining 2026 campaign.
