Stephen Ames wins weather-shortened Chubb Classic

Canadian golfer Stephen Ames emerged as the victor of the Chubb Classic on Sunday morning following the PGA Tour Champions’ decision to truncate the event to 36 holes due to adverse weather conditions in Naples, Florida.

Ames posted an impressive 13-under 131 score over two rounds, highlighted by a remarkable 64 on Saturday, placing him three shots ahead of Rocco Mediate.

With a forecast of 2-3 inches of rain expected on Sunday at Tiburon Golf Club, the tour initially announced on Saturday that the final round would be reduced to nine holes, scheduled for the morning. However, the inclement weather thwarted any attempt to commence play.

A Monday conclusion was not feasible as the tour’s next destination is Africa, with a tournament set to commence in Morocco on Thursday.

Following Saturday’s round, Ames expressed his reluctance towards a nine-hole round in his post-match remarks, stating, “You don’t know what the scenario is going to be [Sunday]. Still don’t know, but apparently we’re still playing nine holes, which like I said before didn’t know that was in our regulations but apparently it is, so that’s something new… There will be a lot of players bringing it up with our commissioner and go from there. Leave it at that.”

Ames secured his seventh career win on the PGA Tour Champions, with four of those victories attained last season, including a triumph at the Trophy Hassan II, a title he will seek to defend in Morocco next week.
