Johannesburg’s Steyn City will host LIV Golf’s first tournament in South Africa from 20-22 March 2026, but organisers say plenty of work lies ahead.
The Club at Steyn City – a Jack Nicklaus-designed championship layout ranked 14th in South Africa by Golf Digest – beat out several contenders after LIV Golf scouted courses nationwide.
The decision followed consultations between LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil, event GM Chris Bentley and head of events Ross Hallett, with backing from sports minister Gayton McKenzie proving pivotal.
Steyn City Properties CEO Steven Louw says the course could accommodate over 15,000 spectators daily, but logistical and on-course upgrades are essential.
“We still need proper calculations on crowd capacity, but infrastructure-wise we’re solid,” he told News24. “The driving range needs expanding because all players warm up at the same time in a shotgun start, unlike regular events. The greens must also be in phenomenal condition, and our agronomy team is working with the R&A’s Sustainable Agronomy Service to ensure that.”
Event planning will also involve mapping out where grandstands and hospitality areas can be placed, and even a possible hole reordering – ending on the 6th instead of the 18th – to enhance the spectator experience.
Transport and access will be another major focus, with Steyn City working alongside Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi to ensure surrounding roads can handle the influx of fans.

Despite the challenges, Louw says hosting LIV’s African debut is a “proud moment” for Steyn City.
“We were approached just over a month ago, and things moved quickly. We’re humbled to be the first to host LIV in Africa – now the hard work starts to make it a success.”
