Australian Rachel Lee won her way through to the round of 16 at the recent US Women’s Amateur.
WHILE none were able to emulate the achievement of Gabriela Ruffels, the only Australian to have won the US Women’s Amateur Championship, there were a number of strong performances from those contesting the event at The Honors Course at the Lancaster Country Club in Tennessee.
Ella Scaysbrook and Rachel Lee progressed to the round of 16 before bowing out, with Jazy Roberts, Amy Hodgkins and Raegan Denton qualifying for the match play rounds, Denton winning in round one before being edged out on the 20th hole in round two.
Roberts was the best finisher of the Australian contingent in the 36-hole medal play, her two-under par total finishing in a tie for eighth.
Scaysbrook, a semi-finalist at the same event 12 months prior, scored a 3&2 victory over Californian Jude Lee in her first match, a one-up win in round two against Japan’s Yurina Hiroyoshi saw her progress to the final 16, before the 20-year-old from NSW was beaten 3&2 by Korean Seojin Park.
After finishing 51st in the stroke play section, Lee would win on the 19th hole in round one, then 5&3 in her second match, before being bundled out by eventual champion Asterisk Talley 3&2.
Talley, just 17-years of age but already boasting an impressive list of results, would go on to become the winner of the 126th US Women’s Amateur following a dominant 8&6 victory over Anna Iwanaga of Japan in the 36-hole final. Talley was nine-under par when the match came to an end on the 30th hole.
Ruffels won the championship in 2019, played at the Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point, Mississippi, beating Albane Valenzuela 1up in the 36-hole final.
