Tassie tune up in preparation for BMW Golf Cup World Final

Winners all of them: Australia’s representatives heading for South Africa and the World Final of the BMW Golf Cup are (from left) Scott Sibson (men’s A grade), Sandra Wang (women’s) and Jim Palombo (men’s B grade).

SCOTT Sibson, a North Queensland accountant who has spent his entire life in the sleepy town of Home Hill on the Burdekin River, prepared for this month’s BMW Golf Cup World Final in South Africa by testing his game against some of Australia’s best senior golfers.

He flew to Hobart to compete in February’s Tasmanian Senior Amateur Championship at Kingston Beach, a tournament he figured would sharpen his game nicely for the BMW Golf Cup decider at the fabulous Fancourt Golf Resort.

And he did well, shooting rounds of 71, 77 and 74 to finish in the top 10.

Sibson, 55, is not your average golfer. He plays off a handicap of one and holds the course record at Home Hill and Ayr, the place where Karrie Webb learned the game.

That’s not always the pedigree for success at the BMW Golf Cup, where golfers of all ages and levels of playing ability battle it out under handicap conditions to represent their country in the world’s largest international amateur tournament.

Sibson rose to the occasion at Sanctuary Cove last October, though, when he navigated his way around the tough Pines course in an outrageous five-under-par 67 to score 42 Stableford points and take the men’s A grade national title.

That performance qualified him for the World Final, where representatives of nearly 50 countries will compete for a title coveted by any golfer who has ever played the game.

Sibson said he had heard outstanding reports about the quality of Fancourt’s two Gary-Player designed courses, and the level of hospitality and luxury at the famous golf resort, set in the heart of the Garden Route in Georgia, midway between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.

Scott Sibson, Australia’s representative in the men’s A grade World Final of the BMW Golf Cup.

“I’ve heard they treat you like royalty at the World Final,” Sibson said. “The facilities are exquisite, everything’s included and you don’t have to put your hand in your pocket.”

The only expense Sibson had to meet was the cost of flying his wife to and from South Africa, his own Business Class fare paid for by BMW. “I did think about asking her if she’d mind sitting down the back,” he joked, “but I figured I’d be killed if I suggested that. I’d be fed to the lions.”

Sibson’s eagerly anticipating the challenge of competing in the World Final.

“Are you kidding?” he said. “I’ve been playing golf since I was 18 and this is the biggest thrill I’ve ever had in the game.”

The charm of the BMW Golf Cup is that the competitors and their partners are treated like tour stars playing in one of golf’s major event – shuttled from airports, and wined and dined in luxury.

Sibson will be joined in South Africa by two other Australians, the winners of the men’s B grade final and the women’s category of the national finals.

The B grade winner was the Gold Coast’s Jim Palombo, who scored 45 points from his 25 handicap, while the women’s champion Sydney’s Sandra Wang, a lawyer who took up golf only four years ago during Covid. She tallied 41 points.

The BMW Golf Cup is contested throughout the world by at least 100,000 keen golfers who seek to reach their National Final by winning one of the 18-hole regional qualifying tournaments hosted by BMW dealers.

Australian regional qualifiers for the 2026 BMW Golf Cup began in February and will run until the end of July. Male and female winners will then head to the National Final, which will be held this year in Queenstown, New Zealand from October 12 to 15.

The 2027 World Final is scheduled for March, but a venue had not yet been chosen.

As a National Final winner in 2025, Sibson will not be eligible to represent Australia again, but that won’t stop him competing in the regional qualifier at Townsville.

“It will be my ‘thank you’ gesture,” he said. “And it will give me an opportunity to tell everyone how fabulous it is to compete in a BMW Golf Cup.”
