David White, Bryan Hoops and Todd Wiseman co-lead Senior division;
Ronnie Clark maintains Super Senior division lead
WINNIPEG, Man. – Team Manitoba has won the Inter-Provincial Team title for the first time at the 2026 Canadian Men’s Senior Championship, presented by BDOat Niakwa Country Club in Winnipeg, Man.
Team Manitoba entered the day one back of Team British Columbia and shot a collective 1-over to finish the team competition at 4-over to win by five shots. Team Manitoba was represented by David White, Todd Fanning and Jay Doyle all of Winnipeg.
For the trio from Winnipeg, it had been something they had talked about for some time.
“At home at Niakwa, Todd and I have talked for years, about winning a senior title for Manitoba and we got the right piece of the puzzle that came with us [White], just thrilled, it’s great,” said Doyle.
“When I heard David was on fire again today, I knew Jay and I wouldn’t be as bad as we were yesterday,” said Fanning with a laugh. “You never quite know what anyone else is going to shoot but I felt quite confident being only one back going into today we had everyone where we wanted them.”
Fanning’s 1-under 71 and White’s 2-over 74 counted for the team on Wednesday with Doyle adding a 3-over 75. On Tuesday, it was White’s 3-under 69 that led the way with both Fanning and Doyle shooting 6-over 78s.
“We’re three old guys but we used to play junior golf together 45 years ago,” added White. “Amazing, we’ve been talking about this for a long time, it’s a great feeling.”
When asked about it being the first time winning for Team Manitoba at the Canadian Men’s Senior Championship, the three collectively took a deep breath and White responded jokingly with a smile, “just needed us to do it.”
The defending champions from Team Ontario finished at a collective 9-over to finish as runner-up with Team British Columbia in third at 10-over. Team Alberta and Team Nova Scotia tied for fourth at 13-over.
There is now a three-way tie atop the leaderboard in the battle for the John Rankin Memorial Trophy. Todd Wiseman of Port Moody, B.C. and Bryan Hoops of Tempe, Ariz. both fired rounds of 3-under 69 to move up the leaderboard to sit 1-under for the championship to join White. Wiseman nabbed five birdies in his second round, while Hoops added three of his own plus an eagle on Wednesday.
While White may not have shot as low as his opening round, he was pleased with his round on Wednesday even though it’s not a place he admits he is familiar being in.
“As a guy who doesn’t hold the lead in a lot of tournaments like this it wasn’t a lot of sleep last night, but I really played great golf today and just didn’t sink the putts I did yesterday but really great golf and to be playing the last group with some very good golfers is going to be fun tomorrow,” added White.
The co-leaders will play together on Thursday, teeing off at 10 a.m. local time.
Ronnie Clark of Scotland shot a 5-over 77 on Wednesday to drop to 3-over for the tournament but still holds the lead in the Super Senior division. Clark leads 2023 Canadian Men’s Senior and Super Senior champion Doug Hanzel of Savannah, Ga. by two strokes.
The field of 154 competitors has now been reduced to the low 74 players following a cut of 12-over based off the Senior division.
The Canadian Men’s Senior Championship was established in 1962 for golfers aged 55-and-over and includes a Super Senior division for golfers 65-and-over that was introduced in 1995.
A trio of Canadian Golf Hall of Famers lead the way having won the most Canadian Men’s Senior Championships in tournament history including, Bob Wylie of Calgary, Alta. with seven (1985, 1986, 1987, 1988, 1990, 1993, 1995). Nick Weslock of Oakville, Ont. with six (1973, 1974, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1983) and Graham Cooke of Hudson, Que. with four (2001, 2002, 2008 and 2009).
The winner will receive exemptions into the 2027 Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship, 2027 Canadian Men’s Mid-Amateur Championship, 2027 Canadian Men’s Senior Championship (plus a 10-year exemption, if eligible) and the 2027 U.S. Senior Amateur Championship.
