The 5 Smartest Iron Buys Of 2026

Irons are the biggest check most golfers write for clubs and the hardest purchase to get right. A set can cost anywhere from $600 to well over $1,500 and for years the price tag was the best clue most golfers had.

In 2026, we hit hundreds of shots with dozens of iron sets and score them for accuracy, distance and forgiveness on a 10-point MGS Score. Outside of the pure winners in our tests, there are some irons that make a smart buy. To find those we looked for the following.

  1. The iron performs in more than one category. An iron that’s long but sprays it, or accurate but punishing off the toe, isn’t doing its job.
  2. The price is justified. These are not cheap but they have to deliver more than you’d expect for the money.
  3. You’ll still be glad you bought it in a few years. Irons are a multi-year purchase. Digging a little deeper into the data to make sure these are right for your game makes them a smarter purchase.

Here are the Top 5 Smartest Buys in irons for 2026, counting down.

5. Wilson Staff Model XB

Wilson is one of the most underrated equipment brands of 2026 and the Staff Model XB shows why. It finished third for accuracy with a 9.5 MGS Score and fifth overall among the 15 player’s irons we tested. It’s a compact, hollow-body head with more forgiveness than its blade-like looks suggest. The trade-off with the XB is distance. None of our most accurate players’ irons was among the longest and the XB is no exception. If you’d rather hit the ball where you’re aiming than add distance, it belongs on your list and for golfers using player’s irons, accuracy should be the key metric to follow.

4. Titleist T150

The T150 was our best overall player’s iron of 2026 and the price is what you’d expect from Titleist at $1,499.99. The smart-buy case is that it gave up the least. It posted a 9.7 for distance and a 9.1 for forgiveness which is rare for a player’s iron this compact. Accuracy was the one place a few other irons were better. If you want a player’s iron that’s long and forgiving without compromising on looks, this is the one that does it best. If the T150 is not a fit for your golf handicap, the T250 had a strong year in testing as well.

3. Srixon ZXiR

The ZXiR earned the top forgiveness score in our entire 2026 game-improvement test while posting top-seven finishes in accuracy and distance which pushed it to fourth overall in a field of more than 20 irons. Srixon’s i-ALLOY steel is softer than the 431 steel most game-improvement irons use so you get a Srixon feel in a forgiving head. It’s $1,099.99 for a seven-piece steel set. It’s built for mid to high handicappers with some swing speed and if you miss the center more than you’d like, it’s a smart buy. The ZXiR is one of those irons that will help you feel like you are playing a better player’s club without having to give up forgiveness.

2. Tour Edge Hot Launch Max D

The Max D is our best super game-improvement iron of 2026 and it’s the least expensive set on this list by a wide margin. It scored a 9.3 overall with a 9.7 for accuracy, the best in the category, and 9.1 for forgiveness. It also finished in the top three for distance. Its 5-iron led the category in straight shots which means the long irons are easier to hit. It’s $599.99 in steel and $699.99 in graphite, about half the price of the other sets here. If you need help getting the ball in the air, it’s hard to find a better deal. It’s also a great option for the beginner golfer or someone who plays occasional golf.

1. Wilson DYNAPWR Forged

The DYNAPWR Forged was the best player’s distance iron of 2026. It finished first for accuracy and forgiveness with scores of 9.8 and 9.3, and an 8.8 for distance gave it a category-leading 9.4 score. It’s a forged, urethane-filled cavity-back that keeps a player’s iron shape while adding forgiveness. The list price is $1,199.99 for a seven-piece steel set.

One more to consider

The TaylorMade P790 is on sale at PGA TOUR Superstore for $1,199.98, marked down from $1,399.99. We didn’t test it this year but when it went through our player’s distance test in 2025, it scored an 8.5, well behind the DYNAPWR’s 9.4. The test years differ so it isn’t a head-to-head but at the same price the Wilson has the stronger numbers. Still, if you’re someone who’s been waiting on the P790 to drop in price now might be the time to capitalize.
