The Chappel Foundation – ‘BackTracking’ in the fight against youth homelessness

Sixty-five golfers enjoyed perfect autumn conditions at the exclusive Capital Golf Club in early April at The Chappell Foundation’s (TCF) third Melbourne Golf Day.

The field was warmly welcomed by TCF co-founders Greg Chappell, still a highly respectable 7-marker at 77 years young, who has already broken his age a dozen times, and Darshak Mehta, who cheerfully describes himself as a hacker, albeit one with a hole-in-one on his golfing cv.

Among the guests were Paul Marsh, CEO of the Australian Cricketers’ Association, and the charismatic Bernie Shakeshaft, founder of BackTrack Youth Works, one of the Foundation’s seven charity partners.

Shakeshaft delivered a moving address on the youth homelessness crisis and the outstanding work BackTrack is doing to turn young lives around, while praising the exceptional work The Chappell Foundation is doing in supporting their grass roots efforts in rural NSW.

While some players found Capital’s water hazards and bunkers unforgiving, the Peter Thomson-designed layout was presented in its usual immaculate condition. There was a genuine buzz in the elegant clubhouse once the final putts dropped and the participants stayed on for the fundraising dinner, where MC Tiffany Cherry did an excellent job showcasing her sporting expertise.

Raffle tickets flew out the door and spirited bidding erupted for live auction items including a luxury trip for two to the Maldives, generously donated by Luxury Escapes.

The day is expected to generate around $50,000, which will directly support the vital frontline work of the Foundation’s partner charities tackling youth homelessness. Again, the Chappell Foundation with their unique structure ensures nearly 96% of donated funds gets to the initiatives at hand. No office, no overheads, no payroll, just volunteers with passion.

The BMW team, led by Foundation director Danny Odman, organised the day seamlessly alongside fellow Melbourne director Dean Kino. The Foundation is also grateful to Crown Resorts for again making the prestigious Capital course available, and to Tiffany Cherry for her donation of time and expertise.

The Chappell Foundation is delighted to announce that Renae Trimble, Chief Commercial Officer of the National Rugby League, has joined its Board of Directors. Renae brings a deep personal concern for homeless young people, along with high-level commercial and promotional expertise gained from senior roles in the hospitality industry and now elite sports administration.

Mehta, the TCF Chair welcomed the appointment: “Renae is a tremendous addition to our board’s collective skill-set. Like all our directors, she freely gives her knowledge, energy and time to our crusade against youth homelessness.”

All The Chappell Foundation directors serve on a voluntary basis, handling the considerable workload of organising events and running the charity. Their commitment ensures that every dollar raised goes where it’s needed most.
