The Golf Influencer Starter Kit

So, you want to be a golf influencer?

Shockingly, you are not the first person to have this idea. But that shouldn’t necessarily discourage you. Being a golf influencer can be a rewarding and lucrative pursuit.

So, after deciding what your niche and your voice will be, you need some gear.

Here are five must-haves for the wannabe golf influencer.

A social media account

For starters, you need somewhere to post your content.

The most common starting place is TikTok or Instagram with later expansion to YouTube. TikTok and Instagram feature more instant gratification when it comes to views but you’ll want to focus on consistency and building a community.

Expand to YouTube when the time is right. When is the right time? Typically (but not always) it comes once you’ve built a decent following on Instagram and/or TikTok.

An above average camera

You may read “above average camera” and start to sweat but you shouldn’t.

In the beginning, this is a “want”, not a “need.” Most new phones will do. Many of the creators you watch every day use their phones for their social media content. When you decide to make long-form content, a professional camera is a great investment. Your phone will work just fine if you’re new to the golf creation space.

** Pro Tip: Film in 2x or 3x with your iPhone Pro for a sleek look with better ball tracking.

A phone tripod

A phone tripod is a must-have when it comes to filming content.

The best creators have consistent framing and other advantages a good tripod has to offer. The benefits of using a tripod far outweigh the cost of the tripod. This is a “need,” not a “want.”

Money

This sucks but becoming a golf influencer is going to cost you some of your hard-earned cheddar.

The initial investment isn’t that large but you must spend time on the course every week. Ideally, you’re playing golf at least twice a week and you’ve got a camera rolling on both days in different outfits. In the past, I’ve maximized my time on the course by planning the shots and content I want filmed beforehand.

Don’t wing it. Go in with a purpose and get it done. Once you’ve purchased a tripod, tee times should be the only thing draining your bank account. And let’s be honest: you’re going to golf anyways. If you’re committed to your dream, don’t let this initial outlay derail it.

Patience

You may laugh reading this but becoming a golf influencer takes a lot of patience.

Most people think that making good content always equals views. This isn’t the case. If you asked me to show you five pages with high-quality content that have never made a real splash, I could do so in about 30 seconds.

At some point, they probably will but consistency and patience are key. Quality content is good. Consistency is better. Consistent quality content is best.

If you do that, I can all but guarantee growth.

Go for it!

We live in an age where anyone can become an “influencer.”

If you have extra time on your hands, why not give it a go? Most creators were exactly where you’re at right now at some point. You could be the next big thing.

If you’re not, you’ll always have the memories. Don’t get overly excited about the prospect of becoming famous. Find your niche, hone your craft and create quality content that others will be interested in for years to come.
