The Hidden Tech In The New Odyssey Tri-Hot S2S SB Putters

A few months back, we had a water-cooler discussion about which company would end up dominating the zero-torque putter space. Someone here definitively said that it would be Odyssey.

I didn’t agree. With companies like Bettinardi, Scotty Cameron, EVNROLL, PXG and TaylorMade all making solid zero-torque putters, I didn’t see Odyssey as having the secret sauce to rise above the other OEMs, let alone the category giant that is L.A.B. Golf.

Once I saw the new Odyssey Tri-Hot Square 2 Square SB putters, I changed my mind about Odyssey’s market potential.

After removing the headcover, I went from underestimating the perennial #1 Putter In Golf company to believing that Odyssey is now the company to chase in the zero-torque putter category.

Once I rolled balls with the Tri-Hot S2S SB putters, my appreciation for what Odyssey has accomplished moved into “Oh sh*t, that’s Jason Bourne” territory.

Odyssey’s first batch of Tri-Hot S2S

Last fall, Odyssey unveiled their first batch of Tri-Hot Square 2 Square putters. The big story of the Tri-Hot S2S line was the new shaft location.

By using multiple materials, including huge amounts of tungsten, Odyssey was able to push the center of gravity forward all the way to the front section of the putter. This new CG location allowed them to attach the shaft in the front section of the putter as well.

This move created a zero-torque putter with a far more traditional look than their first batch of Square 2 Square putters where the shaft attached to the body at a far more rearward position.

Ultimately, the Tri-Hot S2S putters looked more like traditional center-shafted putters than non-traditional zero-torque putters.

The original Tri-Hot S2S putters were the first to feature Odyssey’s new Ai-DUAL insert. This new insert still corrected for roll inconsistencies like the previous Ai-ONE insert but it also put a better roll on the ball.

The Odyssey Tri-Hot S2S putters demonstrated that Odyssey was not interested in just being a follower in the category. With the new Tri-Hot S2S SB putters, they are showing that they want to lead.

The greatest trick Odyssey ever pulled …

Putter companies entering the zero-torque marketplace have all had to address the same question:

Can we make a zero-torque putter that doesn’t look too much like a zero-torque putter?

L.A.B. Golf very successfully has embraced a “let the performance talk” strategy. Making a bunch of putts will make an odd-looking putter look pretty in a very short amount of time. Just ask J.J. Spaun.

Consumers now expect L.A.B Golf’s putters to look odd. Other companies don’t have that design luxury and are, in a way, cursed by their previous successes.

The golfer expects an Odyssey putter to look like an Odyssey putter. An odd Odyssey faces stiff competition from previous models that are more in line with consumer expectations.

That is why I am so bullish on the Odyssey Tri-Hot S2S SB putter line.

These new zero-torque putters do not look like zero-torque putters.

The new Odyssey Tri-Hot S2S SB putters look like normal Odyssey putters. If you didn’t know better, you could easily assume that they are just new Ai-DUAL models. The zero-torque technology is almost completely hidden.

The new shaft still eliminates torque but changes the game

The new Odyssey Tri-Hot S2S line builds upon the previous Tri-Hot S2S plan. The center of gravity is still forward but the shaft no longer attaches to the putter at the CG. Instead, the single-bend shaft attaches to the heel side of the putter as it would with a traditional design.

If you draw an imaginary line from the upper part of the shaft to the head, that line will hit the CG. This is how the torque is eliminated.

Other companies have successfully eliminated the torque in similar fashion but those designs often require atypical hosels to target the CG. That’s not ideal if you are trying to make the putter look like a normal putter.

By already having the CG forward, Odyssey didn’t need to use a crazy hosel. The single shaft bend was all that was needed to align with the forward CG.

Ultimately, the namesake standard single-bend (SB) Stroke Lab 120 shaft looks very normal and attaches to the head at a relatively normal spot.

As a result, the Tri-Hot S2S SB putters look like normal Odyssey putters but are, in fact, zero-torque designs.

The Odyssey Tri-Hot S2S SB models

This release includes the same three putter models as the original Tri-Hot S2S release: the Jailbird, the #7 and the Rossie. As with the original release, these new models also feature the Ai-DUAL insert. The #7 and Jailbird will also be available in a counter-balanced Cruiser build and the Jailbird will be available for left-handed players.

By the way, the fleece-lined head covers are very high quality. I appreciate that Odyssey packaged these new premium putters with premium headcovers. No aftermarket outfits needed here.

Odyssey Tri-Hot S2S SB Rossie

Let’s get the small round mallet out of the way. Historically, this shape rarely fits my eye. Obviously, this is a “me” thing.

Many of you love these little semicircular striking sticks. My first “real” putter was even a Rossie 2. I want to like them but I can’t make them work.

After all of that “positive” preamble, you may be surprised that I consider this the best looking of the three putters. The red rear aluminum section is radiant. The new shaft location really cleans up the front as well.

The Tri-Hot S2S SB Rossie has such a clean and classic look to it.

This new shaft position could open up some new alignment schemes down the road. This putter would look sweet with a line that continues through the flange or with a pair of long lines.

Not saying that will ever happen but it could now that the shaft is not in the center.

By the way, for some reason I am putting lights out with this Rossie. It could be that my current head cold has disrupted my equilibrium. Perhaps Odyssey packed so much help into the ruby roundness that even I can putt with it.

Odyssey Tri-Hot S2S SB Jailbird

Any version of the Odyssey Jailbird is all about alignment. Yes, you can make a case for its stability as well, but the stripes are the main story.

By moving the hosel away from the middle of the putter, Odyssey has improved the Jailbird alignment story. The center shaft, be it attached up front or not, is an alignment obstruction.

With the new hosel location, the stripes line up perpendicular to the target without the shaft interrupting them.

Pair that with the short front edge sight line and you are all clear to line up the lines at the hole.

My favorite Odyssey Jailbird in recent years is the new Ai-DUAL Jailbird Mini. I thought my effectiveness with that putter was due to its reversed stripe color scheme but now I wonder if it was the hosel location. Targeting is so much better (for me anyway) with the SB version of the Tri-Hot S2S than it was with the original.

For this model, moving the shaft improved both looks and performance.

Odyssey Tri-Hot S2S SB #7

I’ve had a version of the #7 head (2026 Toulon Las Vegas CH) in my bag for a while. Transitioning to the Tri-Hot S2S SB #7 took all of 10 seconds. I think that the head-to-head comparison between the Las Vegas and this #7 is what impressed me the most about the new line.

The two versions of the #7 putter heads each have their strengths but the stability of the Tri-Hot S2S SB is impressive. It seems as if even the most casual of putter strokes delivers the ball on target.

The real difference between the two is tone. The auditory feedback of the milled Las Vegas is much more pronounced. You get tonal variation with the Ai-Dual insert but it is more subtle. I feel like I could learn to listen to the softer feedback language.

I’ve got a club tournament next weekend and prior to this putter’s arrival, the Las Vegas was locked into my bag.

Now I’m not so sure.

Odyssey Tri-Hot S2S SB Cruiser #7

For those of you who play Cruiser models, Odyssey is offering the #7 in the heavier (385 versus 365 grams) counterbalanced Cruiser build. I rarely see these in play but enough of you must be buying them for Odyssey to keep making them.

As expected, the whole package is heavier and longer (38 inches) than the standard #7 build.

I appreciate that if our foursome was ever attacked by a course coyote that the Cruiser would make a marvelous melee weapon. I can’t make putts with it but I can defend the tee box with it.

Kidding aside, I know many folks migrate to Cruiser putters when the “Y word” makes putting with a standard putter nightmarish. For them, I’m glad Odyssey keeps Cruisers in the stores.

Normal looks with elevated performance

Although they look like traditional putters, the Odyssey Tri-Hot S2S SB putters are fully operational zero-torque putters. That’s the beauty of these putters and what sets them apart.

They don’t look like zero-torque putters but they perform like zero-torque putters.

When someone who knows a thing or two about putters takes a closer look, they will see that the shaft is not in a “normal” position.

It sits more central and rearward than a typical single-bend shaft would attach to a traditional-torque putter.

However, for the non-putter nerd, the Odyssey Tri-Hot S2S SB putters look like a normal putters. Since it is out of the way of the alignment system, people likely won’t pay any attention to the shaft at all. That’s the brilliance of the Odyssey Tri-Hot S2S SB design.

The new shaft location is the most important thing about the putter but you don’t need to know about it, or even see it, for the technology to be effective.

Putter nerds can geek out on the build innovations involved to make the Odyssey Tri-Hot S2S SB design work while the general putting public will just see a normal-looking, high-performing putter.

Even with the gasp-worthy MSRP of $599, lots of these are going to be showing up in golfers’ bags this season.
