Compleat Golfer takes a look at the highs and lows of round four at the Masters following the start of the year’s first Major.
Winners
Rory McIlroy
He did it both the easy way (record 36-hole lead) and the hard way (slow weekend including more wayward driving) but it doesn’t really matter as he is now just the fourth player to defend the Green Jacket. Anyone willing to rule him out again in a year’s time?
Tyrrell Hatton
The LIV Golfer was the league’s lone shining light and he was rattling off birdies late on Sunday. A closing 65 helped him to a share of third and a timely reminder, he can still challenge for Majors.
Max Homa
Homa has been struggling for some time but shot 67 on Sunday in one of the best rounds of the day as he closed with a top 10 and an automatic invite to next year’s tournament. Let’s hope it’s the start of some great major golf this season.
Losers
Sergio Garcia
The Spaniard capped off a forgettable week with some terrible behaviour as he smashed the tee box, the turf and most things within swinging reach. Poor form.
Justin Rose, Shane Lowry and Scottie Scheffler
Hard to put the duo down here but both will be left wondering what if. Both had a great chance to get to -13 and they finished well short. Rose was the guy most neutrals wanted to win after his playoff loses and he took a two-shot lead before getting chewed up and spat out at Amen Corner. Scottie was brilliant over the weekend but was too far back after two average days on Thursday and Friday. Even then, he was on a charge but couldn’t quite find fifth gear on Sunday. Lowry was another in contention but faded fast on Sunday with a closing 80.

Those terrible “Egg Salad” merchandise
Need we say more? Augusta was always classy and refined. Those lum0 yellow hats have a place but that place ain’t Augusta. After the Kevin Hart nonsense earlier in the week, we need to get back to what the Masters is all about.
Haotong Li
In time, he may see the funny side, but what a terrible showing on Sunday as he putted into the water en route to an 80. A shocking display which came at huge financial cost too.
