The Masters: Winners and losers from round three

Compleat Golfer takes a look at the highs and lows of round three at the Masters following the start of the year’s first Major.

Winners

Cameron Young

He roared into a share of the lead with 54 holes to play with a fine 65. The Players champion is ready to break through and has all the momentum following arguably the most significant round of the tournament to date.

Shane Lowry

A second ace at the Masters and the Irishman is in contention thanks to a 68 on Saturday as he begins the final round two back of the lead.

Scottie Scheffler

The World No 1 has not been near the top of the leaderboard for a day and half but a 65 on Saturday as the big-hitting American four back. It would be quite a spectacle tonight if Scheffler can post another 65.

Losers

Rory McIlroy

A 73 on Saturday was exactly what the neutrals were after. But the defending champion wakes up ahead of the final round with his lead gone and with 13 players within five shots. There were none within six ahead of his third round. His wayward driver has cost him dearly and it will be another painful chapter in his Masters story if he fails to win on Sunday.

Patrick Reed and Tommy Fleetwood

Reed and McIlroy were the only players over par in the top 20 on Saturday. The tough day saw Reed unable to join the chasing pack that includes Cameron Young, Sam Burns, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose and Jason Day. Fleetwood is another name missing from the chasing pack … the Englishman could only muster a level par 72 on moving day.

Anyone who didn’t watch

The Masters on a Saturday is one of the best days in sports entertainment. Of course, the final round is inside most fans top 3 … but Saturday was special with McIlroy faltering, the course firming up and the chasing pack kicking into fifth gear as they reeled in the would-be runaway leader. Go grab the highlights and make sure you watch today.
