Tiger Woods makes Open decision amid ongoing absence

Tiger Woods will miss The Open Championship for the second consecutive year.

The three-time winner did not submit an entry for this year’s tournament at Royal Birkdale before last week’s deadline, as first reported by Bob Harig at Sports Illustrated.

While the official field list has not been released, Woods is expected to miss all four majors for the second year in a row.

His absence comes as no real surprise. Earlier this year, the 50-year-old announced he was stepping away from the game to seek treatment after being involved in a two-vehicle crash near his Florida home.

“This is necessary in order for me to prioritise my well-being and work toward lasting recovery,” he said after being charged with DUI, property damage and refusal to submit a lawful test following the incident in March.

“I’m committed to taking the time needed to return in a healthier, stronger, and more focused place, both personally and professionally. I appreciate your understanding and support, and ask for privacy for my family, loved ones and myself at this time.”

His last competitive start came at Royal Troon in 2024. Since then, he has undergone Achilles tendon repair and back surgery before playing in one TGL match prior to his crash.

It’s unclear when the 15-time major champ will tee it up again.

Newly appointed US Ryder Cup captain Jim Furyk hinted that Woods could still play a crucial role at the showpiece event in Adare Manor next year, despite missing out on the captaincy.

Woods had been the front-runner to lead the Americans into battle for some time, but ruled himself out shortly after his arrest.

Speaking ahead of the PGA Championship, Furyk was asked if he had spoken to Woods since the decision was made.

“We haven’t spoken yet,” he told reporters. “I think, out of kind of courtesy and for him, his family, and I know maybe a road to health, I haven’t reached out, but I will. Definitely.”
