Ronnie Clark and 2023 champion Dough Hanzel tied for lead in Super Senior division
WINNIPEG, Man. – Todd Wiseman recorded a second straight day in the red figures to move into the lead following the third round of the 2026 Canadian Men’s Senior Championship, presented by BDOat Niakwa Country Club in Winnipeg, Man. on Thursday.
Wiseman of Port Moody, B.C. finished his day with a 1-under 71 to follow a 3-under 69 on Wednesday. He now sits at 2-under for the championship, holding a one-shot lead over Bryan Hoops of Tempe, Ariz heading into Friday’s final round.
Wiseman carded four birdies in his round all coming on the back nine including three consecutive from holes 14 through 16 before closing his day with a pair of pars.
For Wiseman, it may sound cliché, but one element has helped him this week.
“It’s probably an over used word in golf but I have been really patient, because out of the 156 guys there isn’t more than 10 that have played here more than this week so getting a feel for the course and then trusting what I see,” said Wiseman, who added his confidence has grown as the week has progressed.
For the second straight day the front nine gave him some trouble, but he managed to only bogey two of his opening nine holes before grabbing his first birdie of the day at no. 10. As his playing partners found trouble off the tee on 13, Wiseman sat in the middle of the fairway. It was there that he second guessed himself resulting in a dropped shot.
“Normally when I’m in between clubs, I like to take the full one and go, but I didn’t and I changed my mind on the way down and chunked it, it went like 80 yards and I chipped it to 15 feet and missed it,” said Wiseman on his bogey on 13.
On his way to the tee at no. 14, he had “a little chat” with himself that helped right the ship and put him back on track.
“Just take full swings, be committed and let’s see what happens and on 14 I rolled one in and 15 I hit a really nice wedge to about six feet and made that and they [playing partners] both went for 16, bigger hitters than me and I happened to hit a nice wedge from 70 yards to about four feet and I made that,” said Wiseman on his run of three straight birdies.
Wiseman added two pars to close his day and holds the lead over Hoops who finished with an even par 72 to remain 1-under for the championship. Hoops front nine put him at 2-over on his round before another pair of bogeys at 12 and 13, put him to 4-over on the day. He rallied Thursday with four straight birdies on holes 14 through 17 before closing with par on 18 to remain one back of the lead.
For Wiseman, he plans to ride his summer of strong play into tomorrow’s final round and credits being in a good place both mentally and emotionally this week and will work to stay within himself on Friday.
Wiseman has admitted that the front nine has been a “significant challenge” for him this week, and while he is currently playing it at a respectable 3-over through three days he knows how to approach things tomorrow.
“Front nine I just got to get into the round and get a feel for it, course has been drying out and the wind is blowing, probably going to be quicker tomorrow. So, hang on for the front nine and stay in position and the back nine here can be a lot of fun.”
David White of Winnipeg, Man. who held the lead following the opening round and co-led after round two now sits T3 with Daniel Neveu of Pinehurst, N.C. at 1-over. Two past champions are among four players lurking closely behind at 2-over including 2023 champion Doug Hanzel of Savannah, Ga. and defending champion Don Martone of Sault Ste Marie, Ont. Dan Keogh of Toronto, Ont. and Ronnie Clark of Scotland are also 2-over.
Clark and Hanzel also co-lead the Super Senior division with Ken Griffith of Red Deer, Alta. in third and five back at 7-over. Hanzel won both the Senior and Super Senior titles in 2023.
The final grouping of Wiseman, Hoops and Neveu will tee off in search of the national championship at 9:50 a.m. local time on Friday.
