Toulon Golf Small Batch Meadow Club Putter

  • The new Toulon Golf Small Batch putters honor Alister MacKenzie’s first course, the Meadow Club golf course near San Francisco.
  • Master guitar maker Jimmy Carbonetti made the sole plate from a fallen madrone tree that lived on the course.
  • Available April 11 at ToulonGolf.com with a MSRP of $2,000.

The new Toulon Small Batch Meadow Club putter is the best limited edition putter that Toulon has produced to date.

I tried to come up with some clever way to say that. Something like Toulon hits a home run! since baseball has just started up. The phrase masterful release floated around the page for a bit in honor of Masters week, but that sounded too much like a bass fishing or porn reference.

Ultimately I kept it simple and to the point. The Toulon Meadow Club is the most interesting limited edition putter that I have seen in a long time.

Building a Collectible

The limited edition putter recipe typically includes a few key ingredients. First, you add a unique head shape. Next, you mix in some atypical necks or materials. Finally, you finish off the batch with a pinch of scarcity.

The Toulon Meadow Club putter has all of those ingredients, but it also has one more. It comes with a story.

Toulon Golf Small Batch Meadow Club: Historical Content

Toulon Golf Small Batch Meadow Club

What is it that turns something old into something historical? I like to tell myself that with every birthday that I am becoming more and more historical, but I’m really just getting older. So what does it take to be considered historical?

Historical things have significance.

The historical thing referenced by this new Toulon Small Batch putter is the Meadow Club golf course near San Francisco. This course was the first golf course designed by Alister MacKenzie. You may be familiar with some of his other courses, like Cypress Point and Augusta National.

If you don’t have the cash or connection for one of those big tracks, you can play Northwood Golf Club near Guerneville, CA. That’s a fun course.

Anyway, honoring the first Mackenzie course seems like a nice nod to history. It seems even more historically relevant for Toulon to do so when you take into account that two of Sean Toulon’s sons used the Meadow Club as their home course when in college in San Francisco.

Toulon Golf Small Batch Meadow Club: The Fancy Metal is not the Story

Toulon Design Small Batch Meadow Club

Like the previous Small Batch putters, the Meadow Club is constructed from 904L Stainless Steel. You know the drill. That’s Rolex watch steel. Higher copper content allows it to resist the elements. Blah blah blah. We get it, it’s fancy metal.

With the Meadow Club, the story is one of wood, not metal.

Back in 2022, a madrone tree that had lived for over a hundred years near the fourth tee of the Meadow Club course needed to be removed for safety reasons.

Rather than let that historical tree end up in the wood chipper, Toulon acquired the tree and incorporated it into the Meadow Club as a sole plate, allowing a golf course tree to continue living on golf courses around the world.

Toulon Golf Small Batch Meadow Club: Jimmy F*cking Carbonetti

At this point, the story of the Meadow Club is already amazing. Toulon decided to make it even more so by once again enlisting the help of guitar maker Jimmy Carbonetti to make the madrone sole plates.

This is the third collaboration between Carbonetti and Toulon. The first was a Toulon Madison that had a sole plate made of guitar maple. The second was The Brooklyn. That one mirrors the Meadow Club plan as the wood was sourced from a Prospect Park elm tree in Brooklyn.

Jimmy Carbonetti is a master luthier. Just check out his Instagram. His guitars are amazing looking. They make me want to dust off my Strat and finally learn how to play just so I could justify buying one of Jimmy’s guitars.

If you were going to partner with someone to do the woodwork for your putter, Jimmy Carbonetti would be at the top of the list. There is a reason why this is their third partnership.

Final Thoughts on the Toulon Golf Small Batch Meadow Club Putter

Toulon Design Small Batch Meadow Club and Guitar

Let’s review what the Toulon Small Batch Meadow Club brings to the limited edition putter table. First, it’s made of fancy Rolex metal and has a unique shape.

By the way, did you notice that I didn’t even mention anything about how the putter would play? Honestly, if you are worried about this putter fitting your stroke then you are missing the forest for the tree.

The Meadow Club Small Batch is a nod to the historical significance of the first course designed by Alister MacKenzie in 1927. It’s pretty spectacular that this putter includes wood from a tree from that course. Wood that was crafted by a master guitar maker.

As far as making a putter more collectible, I’m not sure that is even possible. The Toulon Small Batch Meadow Club is indeed the home run of collectible putters.

FAQ: Toulon Golf Small Batch Meadow Club Putter

How many Small Batch Meadow Club putters are being produced?

75 Meadow Club putters will be available worldwide.

How can Toulon charge $2000 for a putter?

Two grand for a putter is no joke. This time, I’ve no problem with the pricing. This is a unique putter that will be made once and once only. Think of it like a sports card with a piece of game-worn uniform embedded. Some of those cards sell for way more than $2000 and you can’t even putt with them.

Can anyone play a round at the Meadow Club?

Meadow Club is private. You’ll need a membership or a friend with one to play. I suppose you could make the USF golf team as another option. I’d love to play it as it sounds beautiful, nestled beneath Mount Tam. Check Pasatiempo as another fun public MacKenzie option (but wait until they finish the green renovations).

Can’t you give me some idea about how this will play?

OK, fine. The Meadow Club is very similar to the Toulon First Run 24 Memphis with the H7/Flow neck. It’s a medium sized mallet with some toe hang, though not as much as one would expect with the design. The neck attachment is a bit more toward the cavity than a heel-shafted flow neck putter, decreasing the toe hang.
