IT started as a seedling of an idea at the October Women In Golf (WIG) Sub-Committee meeting at Maroochy River Golf Club.
TWIGS, an acronym for Twilight Women In Golf Socials, was launched the following month and just a few months later, the initiative has taken root, with 30 women of all abilities teeing up for a fun nine holes of golf in late January.
WIG Sub-Committee member, Lorraine Mazerolle, has been tasked with organising the new monthly golf event, designed to mix new women members, women on the club’s waiting list and Girls into Golf (GIG) participants with experienced golfers for a fun, social game of golf. Afterwards, the women are encouraged to enjoy a beverage and sometimes, dinner on the deck to coincide with the club’s Monthly Medal presentation at 6pm.
“Enjoying a relaxed, social game of golf on a Friday afternoon is a great way to kick off the weekend for members old and new,” says Lorraine. “But most importantly, engaging with women on the waitlist and new members is just one of many ways that Maroochy River Golf Club seeks to foster a positive, inclusive and supportive culture in our club.”

The TWIGS’ initiative has been welcomed by both new and long-time members, as well as beginners attending the weekly GIG clinics run by club professional, Di Pavich. At the January event, several experienced players, including past captains, put their hand up to guide the ‘newbies’ around the course and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
The monthly event forms part of the club’s Women In Golf Charter Action Plan which was drawn up when Maroochy River’s Board agreed to back Golf Australia’s Women and Girl’s Engagement Plan in May 2024.
Soon afterwards, a Women In Golf Sub-Committee was established and has held regular monthly meetings, developing initiatives to increase engagement with new members, plan a range of social and golf-related activities and strengthen communications.
Over 1,300 organisations across the world have signed up to the Charter and on the Sunshine Coast, Maroochy River Golf Club was the first signatory.
