The road to the 2022 U.S. Women’s Open Championship Presented by ProMedica has begun for the players competing at Sectional Qualifying (Europe) taking place today at Buckinghamshire Golf Club near London, the headquarters of the LET.
There was a memorable moment for England’s Keely Chiericato this morning when she made a hole-in-one on the par-four eighth hole for eagle.
The top three players after the completion of 36 holes today will qualify for the 77th U.S. Women’s Open Championship, to be played at Pine Needles Lodge and Golf Club in Southern Pines, North Carolina, on June 2-5. There are 46 players competing for those coveted three spots in the historic US$10 million Championship today in Buckinghamshire.
This is one of 26 qualifiers at locations in 17 U.S. states plus three international sites.
There have been a record total of 1,874 entries overall, including 12 champions and 24 of the top 25 players in the world. The championship’s youngest entrant is 11-year-old Leonie Tavares, an amateur from Canada. The oldest entrant is 61-year-old Denise Callahan, from Ohio.
Three-time champion Annika Sorenstam, 51, who has competed in 15 U.S. Women’s Open, most recently at Interlachen Country Club in 2008, earned a place in the field by winning the 2021 U.S. Senior Women’s Open last August at Brooklawn Country Club in Fairfield, Connecticut, in her championship debut. She will appear 13 years after her last competitive start in the Championship.
Last year, Yuka Saso, of the Philippines, edged Nasa Hataoka, of Japan, in a three-hole playoff to win the championship at The Olympic Club (Lake Course) in San Francisco, Calif. Saso matched Inbee Park to the exact day as the youngest champion in U.S. Women’s Open history at 19 years, 11 months, 17 days.
