A Elite Scottish Golfer’s Journey to Improve her Game
For many golfers, the quest for improvement is a relentless journey. It’s much more than merely adding yards to your drives or refining your swing. It’s about achieving B-E-T-T-E-R results every time you step onto the course. The legendary Ben Hogan persistently maintained that the secrets to golf success are hiding in the dirt. But today, with the advanced tracking and data analysis technologies offered by Shot Scope, you can follow a well-lit road to game enhancement.
Meet Jennifer Saxton – A Champion Rolling the Ball with Shot Scope
Meet Jennifer Saxton, Shot Scope’s marketing manager and an accomplished golfer, famously known for turning the odds in her favor on the green with the aid of data and analytics. During her time at the University of Stirling, she became a scratch player while juggling her studies in Marketing and Sports Studies. Today, she is a +5 handicap, the 376th ranked woman in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, and a member of Scotland’s national ladies’ team, among other achievements.
But what’s the secret behind her success?
“The change to Shot Scope meant it was faster and easier to track my performance without having to manually input my stats after a round,” she says.
Driving Her Game to +5 Handicap with Data-Driven Decisions
Jennifer practises what she preaches. She uses Shot Scope’s automatic tracking system to track her on-field performance and uses this data to direct her practice and improve her performance.
With the insights from data and analytics, Jennifer was able to know her strengths and weaknesses and take strategic decisions to enhancing her on-field performance.
For instance, she understands the value of percentage shots. For that reason, she prefers hitting drivers off the tee and avoids laying back on par 5s. Consequently, she’s seen her Fairway Hit Percentages go from 51 percent in 2021 to a remarkable 65 percent in 2024.
Facing the Unexpected Reality of the Putting Green
Some of Jennifer’s findings about her game have been unexpected. “To be honest, I thought I was quite a good putter, but, unfortunately, I am not as good as I thought,” she admits. Her data analysis revealed that her performance on six- to 12-ft putts was less than desirable. Armed with this knowledge, she and her coach were able to tailor a practice plan to improve her putting skills.
Representing Team Europe in the 2024 Concession Cup
At present, Jennifer’s greatest accomplishment is her recent qualification for Team Europe in the 2024 Concession Cup Match presented by Golf Genius.
“The awareness around women’s golf is growing and there are more and more opportunities becoming available to us. The inclusion of women at the 2024 Concession Cup gives those of us who have maybe elected not to play professionally but instead work and continue to play golf the opportunity to still compete at a high level as well. As a team, we are hoping to be the first ones to get our name on that trophy and be in the history books forever,” says Saxton.
Tips for Amateur Golfers
For any golfer who’s decided to step up their game, Jennifer advises starting with tracking data. Once you begin, it becomes an integral part of your game. She encourages amateurs to use Shot Scope’s performance-tracking system and collaborate with their coach to analyze data and draw up a personalized plan for improvement.
“My best advice is track every time you play. Don’t just track competition rounds, or good rounds, track them all. You can always filter out rounds you don’t want to look at in your stats. Once you’ve tracked enough rounds, it becomes part of your game, you don’t even have to think about it,” adds Saxton.
If you wish to learn more about performance tracking, follow the path carved out by Jennifer Saxton and use Shot Scope to improve your game.
