Southern Guards GC secured another top-10 finish this season, claiming sixth place at LIV Golf UK at the immaculate JCB Golf & Country Club.
Australia’s Ripper GC claimed the team title, while Lucas Herbert produced a dominant performance to win the individual title at 30-under par. The Australian, affectionately known as “Herbie”, won by six shots after carding a final-round 10-under 62 to record the lowest winning score in LIV Golf League history.
Dean Burmester and Branden Grace led the way for Southern Guards GC, with both players finishing tied for 17th. Stand-in captain Charl Schwartzel ended the week in 22nd place, while LIV Golf debutant Martin Vorster rounded off an impressive first appearance with a tie for 31st.
Vorster, who stepped into the team following Louis Oosthuizen’s withdrawal through injury, described the week as one he will never forget.
“I’m really pleased with how the week went,” said Vorster.
“Finishing tied for 31st in my first LIV Golf event is more than I could have asked for and it was such a great experience. The tournament was incredible.”
The 24-year-old also praised the atmosphere within the all-South African team after spending the week alongside Schwartzel, Grace and Burmester.
“I really enjoyed every moment. They’re just a bunch of fun guys who want to play good golf,” he said.
“There was plenty of laughter on the range and when we were warming up, but at the same time everyone took it seriously when it mattered. I really enjoyed spending the week with the guys.”
Vorster’s impressive debut has already earned him another opportunity, with the young South African confirming he will travel to the United States as a reserve for LIV Golf New York.
“I got the call to be a reserve for LIV Golf New York, so I’ll be heading there next week and hopefully I’ll get the opportunity to play.”
The sixth-place finish sees Southern Guards GC remain seventh in the LIV Golf League team standings heading into the penultimate event of the regular season.
The team’s focus now shifts to LIV Golf New York, which takes place from 6–9 August at Trump National Golf Club Bedminster.
