PONTE VEDRA BEACH—One of Adam Scott’s greatest career memories came at the par-4 18th at TPC Sawgrass, when he rinsed his approach shot on the 72nd hole of the 2004 Players Championship but was able to get up and down for bogey, claiming what was the biggest win of his career to that point.
Scott, who made a significant equipment change on Wednesday night, opting to change out his Titleist woods for the TaylorMade Stealth driver and Stealth fairway woods, arrived at that same 18th hole and produced a career memory he’d like to quickly forget.
Sitting nicely at one under on the day (Scott started on No. 10), Scott rinsed not one but two balls in the water down the left side. His first tee shot traveled 297 yards but never crossed land, forcing the Aussie to have to re-tee. Attempt No. 2 (shot No. 3) was nearly identical, failing to cross land and forcing him to have to hit a third ball from the tee box.

Scott put his sixth shot from 150 yards to 19 feet, then two-putted for a quadruple-bogey 8. To add insult to injury, it was his final hole before play was suspended due to weather, and it doesn’t appear like Scott will be able to get the poor taste out of his mouth any time soon.
Wait, it gets worse. This is the second time in six years Scott has made a quad-bogey 8 at the 18th. The opening round of the 2016 Players saw Scott find water off the tee, then drop in the fairway from 250 yards away and then miss the green miles to the right and making an absolute mess from there.
Ahhh, the highs and lows of TPC Sawgrass. Nobody knows them better than Scott.
