The basics of putting
Getting balanced on your feet puts you in skeletal alignment. But, without getting too technical, it helps you stay steady and relieves stress by removing pressure from your entire body. When you begin your putting stroke in a tight, unbalanced or inflexible stance, your ability to hit delicate putts suffers.
All skilled putters strike the ball with an upward motion at the end: anywhere between two and four degrees. Placing the ball slightly ahead with your sternum in the centre of your balanced stance ensures that it is past the bottom of the arc and on the rise slightly.
Putting positions will vary, but it’s all about stability and comfort. With your knees slightly bent, lean your hips down until your fingertips contact the top of your kneecaps, then grab your putter. As you will see, your posture will keep your arms from being too bowed, but they are not arrow straight either.
The feel of the putter head during the stroke should be one of allowing it to fall. Gravity is the driving force behind all acceleration. When you watch golfers attempting to jam their putters through, the clubhead twists either open or closed. Not only do they have poor distance control, but they also have poor direction.
It’s lousy advice for your complete swing, but great for the putting green. Many players spring out of their position as soon as they strike the putt. You should remain comfortable in your stance long after the ball has passed and the putter head has stopped moving altogether.
