WATCH: Tiger Woods reveals 5-wood from rough trick in TaylorMade Top 10 Tips

The great golfers have always understood that every club can do more than one job.

The indisputably great Severiano Ballesteros would ideally have liked everyone to have played with only a handful, so adept was he at manipulating lie, angle and loft of his clubs.

The equally indisputably great Tiger Woods is another fan of being multi-dimensional with his clubs and in this video made by TaylorMade he reveals just how he has a 5-wood range of around 100 yards.

Not only that, he uses the club for two entirely different purposes.

And while Woods’ exact yardages are beyond the average golfer it does not mean that we cannot learn lessons from the 15-time major champion.

Moreover, in the video, Woods is actually teaching world number one Scottie Scheffler and also Tommy Fleetwood a thing or two.

“I like a 5-wood that has options because I use it a lot,” Woods tells the other two.

“I don’t use a 2 iron that often any more because it’s changed,” he says. “I took it away.”

Fleetwood nods in agreement.

“But I love the 5-wood out of the rough and chopping down on it,” says Woods.

“Say we’re playing bigger tournaments with high rough, 170 yards out, I may open up a 5-wood and chip one.”

Fleetwood smiles in recognition – or maybe realisation.

“I like having that option,” says Woods.

“My 5-wood will carry about 255 but I can hit it either way. I have it set up so I can hit it either way.”

But while that’s his go-to from the middle of the fairway, the club can help him out at other times, too.

“I like it a lot to hit little chip shots out of the rough primarily.”

Fleetwood smiles and says: “I want to hit some chip shots out of rough now.”

He and Scheffler line up in the rough, with a tree slightly blocking their way to the target. They play the easy 5-wood chip with a fade shape.

And both fly out on a lovely left-to-right trajectory.

“See how easy that is?” says Woods. “Well done.”
