We Tried It: ECCO Biom H5 Golf Shoes

Theres a lot of cool gear in the golf world that doesn’t always fit into Most Wanted Tests or Buyer’s Guides. You still want to know how it performs. In our We Tried It series, we put gear to the test and let you know if it works as advertised.

You will be hard-pressed to find a more comfortable golf shoe that supports your foot in all directions. These spikeless shoes take some inspiration from durable hiking shoes, and the style will be divisive because of it. </p>

A few weeks ago, I was invited down to McLemore Resort on Lookout Mountain in Georgia to take part in Camp ECCO, an event where writers and social media personalities tried out the latest offering from the company.

One part of that trip was to play The Keep at McLemore, a beautiful cliffside course that is opening for public play this September. If you want to hear my opinions on that layout, check out my story from last week.

As part of Camp ECCO, we all got to test out the new ECCO Biom H5 golf shoes.

And we’re not talking about a light testing here—this was eight miles of walking through hilly mountain golf just moments after putting these suckers on my feet.

How did it go? Let me walk you through my experience.

They fit perfectly right away

If you are familiar with ECCO, a major point of pride is that golfers do not have to suffer through a breaking in period with their shoes.

That is once again true with the new Biom H5. I wear a size 9, and it was true to size.

I did take out the insert to create just a smidge more room. A great part of this shoe is that taking out the insert has no effect on the comfort—other than providing slightly more room for your foot to move around.

There is almost no possibility of blistering here, and I don’t think that is hyperbole. The ECCO reps on site all guaranteed we wouldn’t have any issues, even after walking several miles in these shoes for more than six hours. They were right.

The fit is immediately snug and secure before you even tie up the laces, which is exactly what you are hoping for out of a shoe. I’ve had a few blisters in my day—it’s the last thing you want out of a golf shoe.

With these, I could literally play without socks and have zero problem.

The first thing you notice is arch support

If you are searching for a golf shoe with pronounced arch support, you will find that here.

I think that is one reason why I felt so comfortable in them.

In fact, after my round was over I actually drove home more than two hours while still wearing the shoes. They felt so much like regular running/hiking shoes I would normally wear that I forgot to take them off before getting in the car.

With the leather upper, you get the feel like this is a thicker, more durable shoe (which it is). At the same time, a soft and stretchy tongue (it is connected to the upper, so there is no separate tongue that moves around) offers a nice welcome into the shoe, and it makes it easy to move your ankle around.

In terms of functionality, I am a massive fan. The Biom H5 goes right to the top of my list in terms of comfort.

I should also note that this shoe comes in the BOA option. You can also get the textile upper instead of leather, which creates the look of a more athletic shoe.

The style is unique and could be divisive

The defining style element of this shoe for me is the waterproof membrane that wraps around the bottom layer.

It looks like the face of a rock, which is an ode to the Scottish Highlands. ECCO is known for its hiking shoes, so that personality fits the brand well.

Functionally, there is no bottom seam here so you can stand in a few inches of water and not feel anything at all (I tested this and it worked swimmingly, pun intended).

Stylistically, this could be polarizing.

When I first saw the shoe, I was struck by how cool it looked. The membrane gives the appearance of snow attached to the shoe, and the membrane is painted in different shades of colors, with some gray mixed in.

It is rugged.

The same goes for the outsole, which looks like cracked ice.

This also includes the wider upper that gives the appearance of a shoe that can withstand more punishment than most golf shoes.

To me those variables say, “I like to walk when I golf. I can walk any distance with these shoes. I’m putting some miles on them and they are still going to look and feel great when I’m done.”

That appeals to me because I’m a big hiker. I like that concept.

It might not be for everyone, however. It’s not a traditional style for a golf shoe, but we should expect nothing less from the brand that championed spikeless golf shoes. ECCO is willing to experiment.

I’m interested to hear everyone’s opinion on this. I’m thinking many will prefer the style of the textile upper, which has more of a running shoe, patterned look.

There is more substance and performance than style

The women’s shoe has a purple outsole option.

Continuing on this theme, the color options available for the Biom H5 are limited and favoring the utilitarian side of things.

I got the gray shoes with white membrane and orange outsole. Another option includes charcoal gray with a black membrane/outsole. Another is an all-white shoe with a blue outsole.

Personally, I think if you want to dress like Rickie Fowler circa 2010, you are probably not choosing these shoes.

Depending on which option you choose and what outfit you have, the Biom H5s can definitely work from a style perspective. And I’m not saying you will look bad by any means. They look really cool, in my opinion.

It’s just that the main reason to wear these shoes is for their comfort, performance, durability and ruggedness—not to win a beauty contest.

Final thoughts

This is a very, very good golf shoe. Among my favorites I’ve tried in the past year, without a doubt.

It’s on the premium side in terms of cost, but you are easily getting that value back in how durable this shoe will be for years to come.

This is such a walkable shoe. If you always walk when you play, this is a tremendous option.

From a comfort standpoint, it is hard to beat. You get great support in all areas of the shoe.

In terms of style, you might be in love with it (like I am) or you might not like it. I wouldn’t say it’s a “safe” shoe in terms of design. It’s bold and cool.

This shoe is a perfect fit for me. Is it a perfect fit for you?
