Forgiveness meets feel
In my relatively short (but passionate) time in the game, I’ve tried my fair share of clubs. But let me say this, the new PING i240 irons have absolutely raised the bar. If they’re not my product of the year, they’re standing on the podium.
I had the chance to put the i240s through their paces, and right from the first swing, I knew there was something different. PING has always been known for quality, but this set really blends performance and aesthetics in a way that surprised me.
First impressions: Clean looks, smart design
What stood out immediately was the head size. It looks compact at address, with a shorter blade length that gives off more of a player’s iron vibe—even though it packs forgiveness under the hood. The thin topline is another big win. It’s sleek and confidence-inspiring, especially for those of us who appreciate a traditional look behind the ball.
The grooves are more widely spaced, which not only sharpens the look of the clubface but adds function too.
I found I could generate more spin from the fairway, helping me with both control and consistency—two things I’m always chasing. The white paint fill-in on the bottom groove is a small but clever detail. For someone like me who tends to aim just a hair right, it really helped with alignment. Another feature that impressed was the rounded leading edge. While not brand new to PING’s design, it still plays beautifully. It glides through the turf and offers a really solid strike, even from less-than-perfect lies.

The standout quality though, was forgiveness. That’s where this iron really earns its stripes. Thanks to a lighter elastomer insert and badge, PING managed to save weight and reallocate it to increase the MOI (moment of inertia). The result? Mistakes don’t get punished nearly as much. On slight mishits off the toe or heel, my numbers on Trackman barely budged, and out on the course, the flight stayed impressively stable.
Another game-changing tweak is a lower centre of gravity. It gave me just that extra bit of launch and distance I’ve been looking for. I usually hit it quite low and flat, but these irons brought my ball flight up in a way that didn’t feel float, just strong and controlled. In fact, a few shots even launched higher than I expected, which threw me for a second – in the best possible way.
Final thoughts: A versatile, tour-ready performer
PING calls the i240 a “true cavity-back design,” and it really lives up to that billing. You get all the perimeter-weighting benefits, especially in the longer irons, but without sacrificing the clean, compact look better players want. There’s no doubt this iron was built with input from Tour players. Yet it doesn’t feel out of reach for mid-handicappers who want more control, better feel, and enough forgiveness to keep rounds on track. So, if you’re looking for an iron that looks like a player’s club but performs like a game-improvement model, the PING i240 should be at the top of your list.
