Q: What’s the most shocking thing you’ve seen inside of a golf ball?
Good question. We’ve seen some pretty crazy things. So when we first started testing golf balls and started cutting them open to see what was on the inside, it was shocking.
When you bought a dozen golf balls, the assumption was that all the golf balls were the same.
We found things like ground up rubber tires inside of golf balls. We found steel wires inside of a golf ball. Incredibly off center cores, and just bad quality control from ball to ball.
Most people don’t know this, but there were companies just copying golf balls from the manufacturer and just stamping a different logo on it.
We found golf ball boxes where you bought a dozen and there were three or four different cores of the ball. Um, we found manufacturers that were all identical, meaning you bought four or five different balls with a different logo on it, but on the inside they were the exact same ball.
Golf balls have gotten a lot better, but we still find the occasional bad ball, which is why we put golf balls through their paces in our comprehensive Ball Lab.
