Golf fans know Augusta National, home of the Masters, better than any other course in the pro game.
The return of the first major championship of year to the same venue creates that affinity and knowledge.
But as much we know about the slopes, we also know that reality is still something of a shock.
We know the greens are rapid, that the undulations are significant, that the colours are vivid, but also that the golfing danger is terrifying.
We still like to ask ourselves the question: what would we shoot?
There have been many attempts to answer this query but Clippd have dived into the data like no-one before them.

Who are Clippd?
They are a golf analysis team whose technology assesses each and every shot to reveal and understand the golfer’s unique golfing DNA.
They connect and unlock the value of the huge volumes of performance data being generated by millions of golfers every day.
Many sports have made huge gains in performance from intelligent use of data and Clippd wants to help golf do the same.
They use advanced data science, machine learning and AI, as well as an unlimited love for the game.
The purpose is to connect rich data from multiple sources into a single platform, providing players and coaches with powerful insights to drive improvement, engagement and enjoyment of the game.
The mission is to help players to truly understand their game and make better decisions about how to play, practice and improve.
The vision is a connected sport that is open, inclusive and progressive, where everyone has equal access to the tools and knowledge to get the most from the game they love.
So this is a comprehensive set-up – but what about the Augusta numbers?
Clippd’s methodology is to use ‘Digital Twin’ technology.
They ran 500 simulated rounds for each handicap band to understand how players might perform from the tournament tees and under the especially challenging conditions at Augusta.
In the model, Clippd assumed that the unique Around-the-Green (ARG) and Putting (PUTT) conditions would make players 5% worse than their typical performance, reflecting both the difficulty of the environment and its unfamiliarity to most golfers.
From these simulations, Clippd captured the average score, standard deviation, and the range (minimum and maximum scores) for each handicap band, offering a realistic picture of potential outcomes in this demanding setup.
The results
A plus-handicapper would total 82.
A scratch-golfer would pencil in an 85.
A 5-handicapper would shoot 91.
A 10-handicapper would card a 97.
A 15-handicap golfer would need 101 blows.
But it’s also worth remembering these are averages.
It pays to look at the expected range for the average golfer (the 15-handicapper).
The best hope would be for an 85 but he or she would also be looking at the possibility of 123 strokes.
Wow!
