Bernd Wiesberger has expressed his concern about just how tough it is to get into the biggest events on the DP World Tour.
“It has a lot to do with economics and a lot to do with who pays for what,” the Austrian told bunkered.co.uk.
He was speaking ahead of the BMW PGA Championship this week. But with more events being co-sanctioned by the PGA TOUR and cards being handed out next season to 100 instead of 110, he decided to speak up.
“Right now, this tour gets subsidised heavily by the PGA Tour. So, in that case, they have a lot of say and a lot of leverage. But it has to be a balance.
“We have a couple of the big events, the Scottish Open is one, Wentworth is another. And it’s a little bit sad to see that if you finish 40th in our Order of Merit, you might not play the Scottish Open. If you finish 75th in Order of Merit, you might not play Wentworth, our PGA Championship. That wouldn’t happen the other way around.
“Obviously, we have a lot of people in the winning category, and that makes it difficult. But it’s not something that has gone the right way. I’m not sure how much there is to be done going forward, but it’s getting worse and worse each year.”
