ATHENS, Ga. — The Georgia women’s golf team is set to open its spring season when it plays host to the one-day Lady Bulldog Invitational on Saturday. The 18-hole individual tournament, which marks the first of six regular season competitions for the Bulldogs this spring, will be held at the UGA Golf Course in Athens with a shotgun start set for 12 p.m.
“It feels great to begin our spring campaign at home on a course we know well,” head coach Erika Brennan said. “The team has already battled adversity with illness and weather, but we are over the hump and ready to compete. It’s going to be a wonderful test to solidify the lineup as we move into team competition next week in Mexico.”
36 individuals from 10 teams are slated to compete at the Lady Bulldog Invitational. No. 5 Texas and No. 14 Wake Forest enter the tournament ranked in the top 15 in the latest Clippd rankings, with both teams boasting a pair of golfers ranked inside the top 100 nationally. Other teams sending competitors to join the Bulldogs in Athens include Southeastern Conference foe Alabama, Augusta, Chattanooga, Clemson, Evansville, North Florida, and Tennessee Tech.
Georgia enters the Lady Bulldog Invitational with five fall tournaments in the books, most recently competing at the White Sands Invitational in the Bahamas on Oct. 19-20. Graduate student Chantal El Chaib earned a share of the individual title at the weather-shortened tournament, shooting 2-under 141 over 36 holes to take home medalist honors on Paradise Island. The win marked her ninth collegiate victory while her 4-under 68 in the final round equaled the best 18-hole score of her collegiate career. The Bulldogs finished sixth as a team at the tournament, carding a 604 over 36 holes of play.
All seven Bulldogs will compete individually at the Lady Bulldog Invitational, teeing off competition from each of the first seven holes. El Chaib will tee off from hole No. 1 with Morgan Smith, Kate Song, Vilde Nystrøm, Celine Brovold Sanne, Zixin “Candice” Lou, and Grace Frei beginning competition from holes No. 2 through No. 7, respectively. Nystrøm, a transfer from North Carolina, will make her first appearance in red and black when she competes on Saturday.
Saturday marks the fourth-consecutive year that Georgia will host the Lady Bulldog Invitational. In the 2024 iteration of the event, Caterina Don shot a 2-under 70 over 18 holes in a runner-up performance to lead a group of four Bulldogs who finished in the top 10. Among those golfers was current senior Kate Song, who posted a 1-over 73 to place eighth.
Georgia will tee off from the front nine in pairs, rotating with golfers from Texas, Wake Forest, and Alabama. The tournament will begin with a shotgun start at 12 p.m. with live scoring available at https://gado.gs/cii.
