Women’s golf runs away with Camp Lejeune

JACKSONVILLE, Nc. —Freshman Dounia Bezzari took third and senior Elizabeth Powell took fourth to lead the Oglethorpe women’s golf team to a win of the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Sunday afternoon at Paradise Point Golf Course. The Stormy Petrels ran away with the team title by 33 strokes.

Bezzari and Powell were the first of five Petrel names in the top eight, as Grace Daech finished seventh while McKazlyn Payne and Katie Sulko tied for eighth. Macie Stefano rounded out the lineup with a solid finish as well, taking 18th.

Oglethorpe led the whole way after posting the low round across all three days of the 54-hole event. Powell (71-71-80) led the team each of the first two days with a 71 on each day, enough to lead the field heading into the final round. Bezzari (74-78-69) led the Petrels on Sunday with a 69, the tournament’s low round.

Powell’s biggest shot of the weekend came Saturday when she eagled the par 5 12th. It helped her start her middle round 3 under through the first 6 holes.

Daech (79-78-79) shot consistent rounds all three days while Payne (83-76-78) improved her standing 14 spots after firing two rounds in the 70’s on Saturday and Sunday.

As a team, Oglethorpe (304-303-306) posted each of the three lowest rounds for all teams in the tournament. This led to a 33-stroke win and a 57-stroke advantage above third place.

Tournament Notes

  • Oglethorpe led the field in every scoring category, including par 3, par 4 and par 5 scoring, plus pars (152), birdies (20) and eagles (1), the only team with an eagle.
  • Bezzari shot 2 over par on the par 3’s to lead the field.
  • Bezzari and Powell were 1-2 in pars with 36 and 34, respectively. They also were 2-4 in birdies with seven and six.

The Southern Athletic Association Championships are set for Friday-Sunday, April 24-26, in Dickson, Tennessee. It will be a 54-hole event at Greystone Golf Club.
