ATHENS, Ga. — The Georgia men’s golf team has signed Grayson Wood, the Atlantic 10 Golfer and Freshman of the Year from Virginia Commonwealth University, head coach Chris Haack has announced.
During his lone season at VCU, Wood became the first player in conference history to earn both player and freshman of the year recognitions. He finished tied for first individually at the Atlantic 10 Championship, helping lead the Rams to their fifth league title. Wood was named to the Division I PING All-East Region Team on Saturday, May 25.
“We’re very excited to welcome Grayson to Athens,” said Coach Haack. “He is an extremely accomplished golfer at both the junior and collegiate levels. Grayson is an outstanding young man who comes from a great family. He has proven he can compete in some of the most challenging environments in collegiate golf and we are thrilled to welcome him to our program.”
Wood, a Fredericksburg, Va. native, capped off his freshman season by helping lead VCU to an eighth-place result at the Chapel Hill Regional during the 2024 NCAA Championships, the program’s best finish in over 20 seasons. His final round score of 64 marked the fourth time a Ram reached the mark.
Wood claimed his two tournament wins during his freshman season. His first came in Cancun, Mexico, during the Los Vaqueros Intercollegiate, shooting six-under-par 210, before finishing in first place individually at the conference championship.
In addition to his end-of-season honors, Wood was also named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week on March 4 and Freshman of the Week twice during the fall. In total, Wood placed in the top 15 individually in eight of 12 tournaments, including five top 10 finishes in his freshman season.
Prior to signing with VCU, Wood was named the Virginia State Golf Association Junior Player of the Year in 2022. He graduated from Massaponax High School in May 2022, taking a gap year between completing high school and enrolling at VCU. As a junior, Wood won the 2022 Bobby Bowers, the 2022 VSGA Junior Match Play title, the 2022 VSGA State Amateur Championship, and the U.S. Amateur Qualifier in 2023.
Wood was born on May 24, 2005, in his hometown of Fredericksburg, Va. He is a brother to Marshall and the son of Ken and Rise Wood. Grayson began playing golf when he was three years old and grew up playing at the Fredericksburg Country Club.
