Young leads at weather-hit Wyndham Championship

Cameron Young held a one-shot lead with three holes to play when weather once again interrupted the PGA Tour’s Wyndham Championship in North Carolina on Friday.

The American was bogey-free through 15 holes, carding seven birdies to move to 14 under par, one stroke ahead of defending champion Aaron Rai, who was 13 under with five holes remaining in his second round.

Rai, who endured a marathon Sunday to win last year’s weather-affected edition, is hoping for a smoother weekend once play resumes.

“Sometimes it’s a nice way just to reset and refresh and go into tomorrow with a new mindset,” said the Englishman. “Obviously there’s a positive of keeping the momentum going if the delay doesn’t happen, but you’ve got to make the best of whatever situation comes your way.”

Friday’s play was suspended for the second time due to thunderstorms, with officials eventually calling off action for the day.

Mac Meissner and South Korea’s Im Sung-jae lead in the clubhouse at 12-under-par 128. Meissner signed for a 63 featuring eight birdies, while Im fired a 64 that included an eagle and four birdies.

South Africa’s Christiaan Bezuidenhout sits at one under par through 12 holes.

This week marks the final event of the PGA Tour regular season, with the top 70 in the FedEx Cup standings qualifying for next week’s playoff opener, the St Jude Championship.
